Expectations & singling out players

One of the things PM does that I don’t understand is at times building unrealistic expectations.
1) At beginning of season he said the one player he was concerned about was Josh Smith. He said “if something happens to him...”. Ok, Smith is good but it sounded like “if he gets hurt, we’re dead.” Aren’t you putting too much pressure on one guy?
2) He said Cabrera needed to step up if LSU was going to make a run. He was probably right, but do you tell the media that?
3) At start of year he pitching staff had potential to be great. Again, probably right but do you tell the media that?
Some of the expectations for the year were based on PM’s statements.
