Everybody picking us fifth in the West with a 7-5 record
Posted by Tigerpaul1969 on 7/18/18 at 10:58 am1929
Since 2000 in the West, we have finished first 5 times, second 8 times (including O's interim year), third 4 times (including last year) and fourth ONCE. We have never finished fifth or lower since 1999. We have not had fewer than 8 wins since 1999.
Just last year, we finished third with a 6-2 conference record. Remember, we have twice gone to the SEC title game with a 6-2 or worse conference record. Last year, we lost to TROY and still managed a 9 win season.
Two years ago, we lost to Wisconsin to start the season, lost one of our creampuff games to a hurricane and badly botched job by the UF AD and STILL had an 8-win season.
I get now why Aaron Rodgers told all the Green Bay fans to R-E-L-A-X!

We ought to hang around for a while and see if we can give 'em all a nice big shitburger to eat!

If you take a step back and look at Mississippi state's talent and who they return, Auburn and Bama and then look at what we lost it's not hard to see why pundits have us pegged 4th or 5th.
(I'm not saying I agree or disagree with the assessment, just pointing out it's not far fetched to see how they got there when you take off the LSU goggles)

Well we finished 3rd last year and in 2016 (Auburn is a 5-3 SEC record too and they beat us head to head)

It's going to be funny when Moo St loses 5 games

expectation at LSU should always be to win the West.

They are right.
This team is better than your typical 7-5 team, but with that schedule, this is a 7-5 team.

Head to head is only used to determine who gets to Atlanta, not every position from 1 to 7. We were both 5-3, which was the second best record in the division that year, so we tied for second.

OMG some one said 7-5...how dare they predict that!!!
Why do so many get bent over predictions? If they had said 10-2 would you have had a better day and better outlook on the season? IF they do go 7-5, will you post about how you were wrong and predictions were right?
Fact is, LSU can very easily go 7-5...8-4...9-3...10-2...12-0. They have to go out and WIN!
These predictions are simple...predictions. RELAX

In fairness, O has broken some dubious records in his short stint here (Troy loss; Miss St. loss), so past performance doesn't predict future results.

Maybe it's because of who the HBC is?

they do that annually, why would it be funny? what does that even have to do with "everybody picking us fifth in the West with a 7-5 record" ??

What records are you talking about?
Saban lost to UAB, and Miles lost to Miss. St. in 2014. These types of losses were not only not unprecedented in the history of the program (I could point out losses to Colo. St. and Miami (OH) right off the top of my head), they were not even unprecedented in this Golden Age that we are in.
I'm not sure why no one was impressed with how the team came back after those losses to beat UF on the road (a very desperate program trying to save their coach at the time) and the eventual West champ, Auburn, after giving up a 20-0 lead. Given O's status and the negativity surrounding the program after the 30 point loss to MSU and the loss to Troy, they could have easily mailed in the rest of the season. But they didn't. Is that not a testament to not only the players on this team but the coaching staff as well?

If they do then the pundits were wrong...but that has nothing to do with pre-season predictions. They see the talent they return and the fact that they again have a good offensive mind calling plays with that talent.

We finished in a tie for second with them. I'm not sure why this is so hard to understand. The only people who try to make this distinction are fans who heads will explode if there isn't a resolution of every little thing. It's why, technically, Ole Miss' Co-West Champs 2003 banner is accurate. It's just silly because it doesn't mean anything.

I don’t think y’all finish 5th (3 teams in the hunt for 3rd: LSU, State, TAMU) but how do finishes in the past have any influence on how a team finishes this year?
