So we're going to need Etling to have a big game.

Thanks. Would this show that the QB doesn't have to have big rushing yardage, but he does have to have a lot of carries? Especially on 3rd downs.

Been saying this since being of season D. etling would have to have a huge game for LSU to have a chance. All the guys below were guys that the offense was built around. At LSU the QB position for the most part has been sheltered from trying to do to much minus the one year by z. mett. Yeah i know JJ won in 2011 but that was one of the best defenses in LSU history. The reason bama has won many recently and the reason they will win tonight is LSU's QB play. AS much as i want to believe Danny Etling can carry LSU to a win i havent seen anything against a good team to make me believe he could put the team on his back to carry LSU to victory. Would love to eat crow pie tommorrow though

Main focus is that you can't hide your QB and expect to beat Bama. Every guy on the list was mobile and that added to the win, but if anybody watched these games before, and with all the stats laid out, you'd know the QB made big plays during the game whether they were in the run game, pass game, or both.

The weakest stat line on there is probably Jones by most, but seeing as he converted big downs with his arm and legs and it was literally his second start of the year, 286 total yards and a TD is huge coming from the QB.

Others will probably say Marshall, but their game plan was pretty much read option Bama to death, picking your spots to pass, and it worked to a tune of 296 rush yards averaging 5.7 ypc as a team. Throwing 2 TDs and zero ints also made his performance super efficient.

Every team that has beaten Bama over the past 5 years has done it with a playmaker at QB.

Etling just doesnt have the skill set to put up those numbers. The defense will have to score and dominate.

totally agree in this day and age the winning teams in any level of football have to have a legit QB. How may teams in NFL or college that are say top 5 to top 10 shelter their QB. When LSU finally realizes that, which i think they have with this years freshman class, than we can stand toe-to-toe with the elite programs in the nation

For the most part, yeah. Even when Cardele Jones played he had a lot of plays himself. The lowest amount of plays (passes and carries), any guy had in those wins was 33. Everybody except for Marshall had at least 41 plays. Hell even the times where Marshall wasn't the passer or runner, he had to make decisions and reads in the option game.

How come all didn't feel the same about LF after shutting his pants both times he faced Bama. Yall shite Etling down for running for his life against Bama with only a few weeks as being a viable part of the offense, and then roll your eyes when Etling is lights out. Alinski would be proud.

I keep thinking of Mauck against Tennessee in the SEC title game. He had some designed runs and killed the Vols D each time. They were not ready for him and could not adjust to stop his Qb draws.

here are Etlings numbers:

Etling is 14th in passing efficiency in the FBS - very good in efficiency,

and is ranked 61st in completion percentage with a 60% completion percentage - which is about average

but ranked 100th in completions per game at 11.63

he is ranked 70th in yards per game at 181.5 yards per game - about average, a little below

and he's ranked 80th in total yards per game with 193.4 ypg - average

If he hits his average in most of those stats, LSU has a good chance of competing, staying close; winning

if he doesn't Guice better have a monster night

or maybe Etling will surprise and double his yardage per game

I keep dreaming of completions to the bevy of superlatively talented receivers, Davis, Anderson, Sullivan, Chark, etc. and the ability for an LSU qb to make those throws

every year

Yes, we won't see Chavis today but with designed runs Etling could force Bama to cover Qb draw plays at the very least.

I have to believe in order to win this game we have to get some carries by the Qb. We don't need the Qb to rush for 100 yards, but we need to force Bama to make the adjustment and therefore possibly get caught out of position.

I see numbers in here that look like they could be Etling's.

Unfortunately, they are not all on 1 QB.

quote:

2013 Nick Marshall 11/16 97 yards 2 TDs, 17 car 99 yards 1 TD
quote:

2015 Chad Kelly 13/33 341 yards 3 TDs, 8 car 21 yards 1 TD

Even so, we came very close in 2014 with horrible QB play.

8/26 76 yards 1 TD 1 Int, 13 Carries 40 yards 0 TDs

Honestly, I think we win that game if we have even Etling quality play.

Hmmm. So to beat the best team in the country you have to have your QB play well...never would have guessed that

considering that Etling hasn’t passed for over 250 yds in a game all year, the odds of him doing it against Bama do not seem very good. Bama’s defense is going to have a field day against LSU’s offense.

Make it a shoot out instead of a defensive game and you have a chance.

Again, LSU does not like Duel threat QB's! That is why we have not been that good since we had Flynn! Don't see why coaches have not picked up on it?

What stands out to me is that every QB but one threw had to throw the ball more than 30 times.

This tells me Bama shuts the run game down(duh) and that Entling will have to throw the ball more than he is used to and have success doing it to have a decent shot at victory.

The OL is going to have to step up their play.
