25 solo tackles as your MLB is not what I would call getting the job done, in fact it's piss poor. Reminds me of the mark simoneau days for the saints a few years ago.

25 solo tackles for a MLB for 13 games has to be a low for an LSU MLB

Maybe the master plan is to use Welter as a decoy, opponents concentrate on taking him out of plays while the more talented guys rack up all the tackles/stats?

No?

Taking welter out of a play requires all of "hey player x...go block him" not much concentration or game planning needed there

Les also raved about JJ only for him to actually get worse

I don't know what LSU football you watched in 2011 if you didn't see improvement in both JJ and JL from 2010.

Not saying either set the world on fire, but they certainly did better and not "worse".

I don't think he would get as much hate if Beckwith wasn't behind him. Mike linebacker is one position that experience can sometimes cover a lack of athleticism. Not that he isn't athletic but compared to Beckwith he's far off. We need that intelligent player that will remember what everyone needs to be doing when the pressure is on and other players nerves are getting the best of them. They will look to him in those times for stability... So the answer to your question is yes.

Welter was academically ineligible in 2012.

so in summary Welter's supporters basically only have "but chavis starts him!!!" to defend his play.

I mean he is the lead dog coach of the defense.
But frick, what's he know?

GD you people.

Watching 2013 replays and you see him essentially "in position" and then the opposing player just runs right by. He is two speeds slower than every person out there sans offensive guards perhaps. This was time after time after time. You just can't learn or teach or practice speed. Either got it or ain't got it.

Maybe he spent more time studying the playbook than his school work. A possible A for effort there football wise.

I don't think many people expected Kevin Minter to come on as strong as he did so maybe there is hope for Welter. If he could just learn to shed a block faster he would be fine.

Did you hear him talk at media days? Welter is not the sharpest tool in the shed.

DJ had 25 solo tackles, 55 assited tackles, 80 total tackles, yet only 4 TFL netting - 11 yards. In a scheme that is designed (by Chavis' own words on Moscona's show) to make your mlb the focus of the scheme, that just isn't enough production. Also number of tackles doesn't tell you anything. If I told you that a guy got 15 tackles, and they all came after a gain of 10 or more yards, would you be fired up by that? Where tackles are made is as important as making the tackle. By way of example, Kevin Minter had 55 solo 75 assisting 130 (!) total tackles and capped that astounding production with 15.0 TFL netting - 52 yards. Over twice as many solo tackles. In a scheme that demands that, it is huge! When you remove that ability from the middle of Chavis' scheme, you get run on a lot. That's why it is an issue. Passing game issues: Kwon for example last year had 4 pass break ups and 4 passes defended. Welter had 1 of each. Kevin Minter had 5 and 6, respectively the year before. Ego Ferguson last year had 3 and 3. Where is his production in the passing game? He isn't TFL'ing, he isn't sacking (meaning he must be in coverage), and he isn't impacting the passing game.

Thanks for this info.

I never bothered to break down the stats.
I just was going off of sheer memory.

People will still argue against these incredibly telling stats.
Those who just expect that he will somehow be a different/ or improved player, need to take off the purple and gold shades.

Sadly. I felt the same way about Barrow. He was an average LB, who did not make enough game changing or impactful plays to be considered an asset to the defense. I could care less that he wore 18 or 000. Playmakers make plays.
And they are impossible to miss on gameday.

Example:
Georgia game this year.

If I recall, 1st play, was a handoff to Gurly.
Alexander comes flying from the far side of the field, by passing Barrow on his way to the tackle. How does the outside LB from the far side, make a tackle on a play before the LB that was already in position on the play side.

Interesting analysis. It made me curious as to Minter's stats his first year playing MLB. Minter in 2012: 21 solo tackles, 40 assists, 1 sack, and only 3 unassisted tackles for loss, for a total of -15 yards. Minter also had 1 pbu, 1 PD, and 1 qbh. By your logic, Chief should have found someone else to play Mike in 2012. That would have been a shame, as Minter had a great 2nd year playing the position. Just comparing apples to apples. I think Minter's 2012 year shows that Chief knows what he is doing with the MLB position.. It is also fairly easy to see that Chief asks his MLB to do much more than just play his own position, which takes longer to develop than the other positions.

Yep. Minter was a beast his final season, I'll give Welter the benefit of the doubt
