You have to ask yourself...what leverage did O have for ANY kind of buyout. Who were we competing against? If we told O we would give him a 4 year $2M salary with a .39 cent buyout....would he have declined?

I don’t doubt that and the really scary part, for me, is that he didn’t see the potential for that when he made the hire.
Who among us LSU fans couldn’t have made the hire that Joe made? Really...is there anyone among us who if we had been given the LSU AD gig last Dec. who couldn’t have hired Coach O for the same salary and buyout??? What’s that say bout the job Joe did?

The salary was pretty reasonable for the position (not necessarily the candidate, but it is what it is).
It is the buyout that is laughably bad for LSU.
Realistically, the contract should have been ~$4 million/year for 3 years, with the first year guaranteed, and a 25% buyout for the unexpired portion. O would have been in no position to say no.
So, we'd have paid him $4 million for this year and to fire him at the end of the season would have been about $2 million.
The buyout that is rumored (confirmed?) to be in place is clearly not to protect O or to enticed him to sign at a lower salary. It is to protect Alleva. As Alleva is an agent of LSU, not Orgeron, he should be fired for this clause alone - regardless if O never loses another game.

Under other circumstances, this is a fair point.
But what do other coaches already think of us because we HIRED Orgeron?
That issue may be more damaging,in the long run.
