Story goes that he came to A and M for a visit an coach Bryant locked him in a room while they went to Junction Texas for spring training. That is a joke I think but I do know that he is the only heisman winner coach Bryant ever had.

Bear Bryant was coaching at aTm and he cheated in recruiting. Every major recruiting rule in place today is because of Bear Bryant's recruiting "methods". He would sign 125 players. His assistants would say, "Coach, we've got 4 great QBs, 2 freshmen, why sign this kid?" The Bear would say, "Wouldn't you rather a kid that good be running our scout team than starting at Auburn?" Buy cars, jewelry for mom, pay for trips, had kids make "visits" at away games (read "free trips"), jobs with great paychecks and non-existent duties, paying smart kids to take classes/tests for players, etc., Bear was at the vanguard of all these "methods".

I'm not saying other schools didn't do the same things, particularly in the south to try to compete with him, but Bear Bryant was truly a cheating pioneer, a visionary, really.

He is from Marion just north of Sterlington La and his parents moved to Springhill where he grew up. His Dad worked at the Paper Mill there.

From what I remember he was enrolled at LSU. Bea sent someone to get him and he ended up at aTm. If Jimmy Taylor had stayed for his senior year, could we have had Taylor, Cannon and Crow in the same backfield ?

Look, it's hard to turn down Tom Berenger.

He was awesome in all the Major Leagues. And Platoon.

He coached at NLU before they became the University of Monroe at Bayou Desiard on the Banks of the Parish of Ouachita South of Arkansas but East of Mississippi and West of Shreveport.... whew... now they're known as UMBDBPOSAEMWS for short. And they've made sure they have a PC mascot too. It's like an eagle/falcon/hawk type thing that maybe flies a plane.

Yes Jimmy & JD would have been seniors & Billy a soph. Warren Rabb also a soph was a single-wing
tailback @ Baton Rouge High before he became LSU's QB . Could you imagine this combo in a wishbone formation ! Nobody would have played us.
Another soph , future ALL PRO Johnny Robinson would have been warming the bench behind the 2 Heisman winners , 3 ALL AMERICANS , 4 ALL SEC & 3 ALL PRO backfield . ( Jimmy was the only player to break Jimmy Brown's 10 yr stranglehold on the NFL rushing championship & he did it as a full back !)

The story about John David Crow was that he came to LSU to start school , spoke to the BEAR and drove away from the LSU Campus for the last time in a brand new Oldsmobile headed west !! So the story goes ?
