No.. If I am not mistaking this has been in place awhile. The title game is single elimination. If they didn't do single elimination, then it would take longer to finish these terminates and they have to get the regionals in order, etc.. So it's not stupid.

Only the final game (starting in 1990). The first part was a four team double elimination tournament. The SECT is single elimination for semi finals as well as finals. The coaches agree to that because why should they waste all their pitching for an exhibition tournament when the real post-season starts next week.

As well as the "play-in" portion of the first round. It's a convoluted bracket, but it works within the confines of getting as many teams in as possible and finishing as soon as possible.
