He signed with Bama and Avery Johnson. When he was fired Bama granted him a release.

Don't think LSU was ever in consideration. He originally signed with Bama. LSU rose with J Smart instead.

Bama let him go because he had a heart issue

Bama and Baylor both had better offers on the table as they were paying players as well

Can't imagine going to Waco for the scenery or their professors on campus. Baylor has no real basketball history.

Actually Butler had an undiagnosed heart condition that Bama’s doctors found and refused to give him a medical clearance. He then transferred out to find a program that would clear him and obviously Baylor did.

Look I love LSU. Grew up in Baton Rouge. Have been to Waco and even I find your statement hysterical.

If we took Javonte Smart instead of him I am okay with that. I saw Smart play several times in high school when Scottlandville would play in the Sugar Bowl Tournament. After watching Smart play, I declared him to be our top recruiting priority and we got him. It would have been nice to get both though.

Miles wanted him at safety. The rest is history.

Everyone loves using revisionist history, but you have to go back to 2017. Wade had just arrived and Smart was the No. 1 player in the state. Wade made getting him priority No. 1. Which was a TALL task considering (1) Wade had never coached a game at LSU at that point, (2) LSU was coming off a horrible final year under Jones and (3) Many of the bluebloods wanted Smart...and Baylor was one the the teams recruiting him.

Ultimately, Smart committed in the summer of 2017 and it was the first big domino to fall for what would become a great recruiting class. At that time LSU had a (to be) freshman PG signed in Waters. A (to be) Soph. guard in Mays. And now a big time guard in Smart committed. Butler signed with Alabama in the fall, but never played a game because he was released from his LOI due to health concerns.

Drew and Baylor have a long history with Riverside in LA so it was not surprising he ended up at Baylor. It was probably a bit more surprising that he didn't go there in the first place. He's turned out to be a tremendous player. But in 2017...and maybe even today...given the choice between Smart and Butler it was an easy decision to go with Smart.
