Did JJ punt Kelly?
Posted by Fisherchefjeff on 6/27/22 at 8:47 am448
Wes was JJ's first option last year, but he wasn't ready. Maybe he called JJ and said he was now ready. Why else could you pull a MLB coach from a division leading team mid-season for a parallel job?

I can tell you this, Wes wouldn't dump his job with the Twins on a whim. He was ready to get back in college ball and wanted to work with JJ. How the rest played out seems pretty obvious.

$350,000 raise from what he was making in Minnesota. He doubled his salary. That’s pretty good in my book

It’s more likely that Wes Johnson didn’t like something about coaching in the mlb and reached out once there was an opening.

I doubt he punted him into getting a head coaching job at a power 5 job at a place kelly used to coach as an assistant

And about 90 less games and only 5-10 weekends on the road.

My gosh, how do some of you think this stuff up? Do you think Kelly took a job at McNeese as the pitching coach or something?

Yeah, I’m an idiot for not taking into consideration the recruiting.

I don't think he did considering Kelly got a HC job, but someone did allude to this. Sounds unlikely, but nothing would surprise me.

I think Kendall Rogers said it was closer to $500k. There are likely incentives.

correct. its a couple things
1) the salary
2) as much as recruiting can suck, still less travel
3) as far as the twins have come in embracing data driven development, they still were not fully on board, just like over half of the mlb(mostly the lower half lol).
4) still have less control in mlb and the minors over players and honestly many times the minor league guys want to buck the system put in place. as much as NIL changes the game somewhat as far as control....nothing compared to MLB.
5) Wes wants to be a head coach in big time college baseball, fastest and easiest path is to come to LSU, establish an amazing program of development and help LSU return to dominance. JJ has proven he knows how to get guys jobs, with the 700k salary, he will have to get Wes a premier job and he will once LSU returns to dominance.
for those wondering why someone would like college of MLB, you can control every aspect of development with colelge. you work much closer with the S&C staff to individualize the programming to correct imbalances and work on weaknesses. You can work with the S&C staff to see where the individual is weak on the strength curve and work the weakness and if they are weak on long toss or certain mechanics, you can establish those off season programs to develop and correct those things.
many times in MLB you run in to S&C coaches who are instructed to just do no harm to the top prospects no matter what. you still ahve mlb programs that will not allow deadlifitng over 225 for pitchers no matter if the player wants to or not. Doesnt matter if the player is force deficient....not gonna be allowed.
Kyle of driveline and Dr Heenan have talked about how arse fricking backwards most to the lower level clubs are and how resistant they are to change no matter how much they suck year over year. Its why kyle left cincy, was tired of being undermined everytime he implimented a change.
as good as the twins have been about embracing change and turning that into wins, still dont have 100% buy in when it comes to player development. We gets that here from the top down.

been confirmed by mutiple outlets to be 700k.

Why would this indicate that Kelly was forced out? It makes no sense.

moreso now especially with the amount of film everyone has at their disposal. It's less scouting and more face time...and let's be honest, the big time prospects will seek a guy like Wes out. Between him and NIL, hoping we get some guys on campus we'd normally have 0 shot at.

Per Blake Money, Kelly told the pitching staff that his dream was to be a head coach and UW was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.

Most people don’t realize that things can be partially true. I don’t think JJ had Kelly on the first train out of Baton Rouge, but if he had information that Johnson had a change of heart and wanted to be back in college, it’s not unrealistic to think that he lobbied for Kelly to get the Washington job.
