Did anyone here know the great Joe LaBruzzo, one of my all-time Tiger favorites?

I was thinking about Joe this morning.

Several things came to mind. He was co-MVP in one of the greatest LSU victories ever, the 1966 Cotton Bowl upset of Arkansas. Joe scored both LSU tds in that game, behind great OL play.

I also remember as a kid sitting near the corner of the end zone in Tiger Stadium, when Joe caught a beautiful TD pass against Alabama. This would have been the 1965 season.

Lastly, and I still can't believe it, watching Stan Hindman of Ole Miss crossing the field and catching Joe on about the 3 yard line after Joe had run about 80 yards down the sidelines with a punt. That was a nationally televised game in 1963. Joe maybe should have cut back a little on that return and he might have scored.

Anyway, a few memories of a great LSU player.

Rest in peace, Joe.

Remember him?

When I was a kid a got a Magic Marker and turned a plain teeshirt into an LSU teeshirt with number 22 on it. Everytime I see that number on a jersey the player I think of is Joe Labruzzo

I remember that Joe ran a bunch of plays in a row, behind Tiger OT Dave McCormick. They plowed an AA DT for Arkansas in the process.

I remember Joe getting stabbed near Broussard Hall after a confrontation between FB players and John Q Public. Never amounted to anything.

That still doesn't erase the memory of Stan Hindman, Ole Miss. Defensive End running him down and tackling him on the three yard line, after a fifty or 60 yard run.
Joe was known for his speed.
I was in the Navy, looking forward to the game all week. Me and my shipmates all gathered in the Enlisted Mans Club to watch the game. They were college football fans from across the country. My best friend was a Nebraska fan. Another was a Washington Husky. Sigh! Such misery. 30+ to 3, Ole Miss.

Sorry! I didn't read your entire post before I responded.
I'm still traumatized.

LaBruzzo had one of his arms taped in upright position (questionable if he should have played). This position of his arm caused problems with his running, otherwise Hindman would have never touched him!

I attended LSU 1959-63. During the summer of 61, I had a job with a construction company that was remodeling Pleasant Hall. One of the jobs we did was breaking up a concrete floor, I believe was in the basement. Joe LaBruzzo was one of the other workers that was part of the group. He was amazing! He was small, maybe 5'8" tall. He used a 10 lb sledge hammer and swung it like a baseball bat! We also had a football player from Southern Miss, a lineman that was huge. We called him "Big Un" Joe LaBruzzo could break up concrete at twice the speed of Big Un and he never seemed to wear out! I will never forget Joe. He was like a mighty mite! He has always been one of my favorite LSU players! Rest in peace, Joe!

Yes, I knew him. He was electric with the ball in his hands. If he played today in a spread offense, he would win the Heisman.

Your memories of Joe are the same as my memories. The cotton bowl game was epic and a big upset for the tigers.

I was sitting in the student section of Tiger Stadium that game and could not believe that Hindman caught him from behind.

Their two min drill in the Cotton Bowl was Labruzzo off tackle - every play.
When he "transferred" from LCO to Lockport I believe he had some unheard of stats when the two teams met, like 327 yards rushing.
Joe was electric.
His brother Frankie was faster.

A cousin of mine was a lineman on the Lockport High team Joe was on. Said coach Hillman, Mike Hillman's father, told the line to not bother blocking anyone past the line, just open a hole.

Only Lil Joe story I have is he led lil Lockport High school coached by legendary coach Dudley Hillman over the mighty LCO bulldogs (lil Joe's former team).

Major upset and I mean MAJOR UPSET. Something along the line of App St beating Michigan.

I went to school with a kid by the same name in the 80’s/90’s. I’m guessing he was Joe Labruzzo Jr (but didn’t go by a junior), or it’s just an odd coincidence. Hmm.

My earliest memories of LSU football are of Joe LaBruzzo and Nelson Stokely.

I was so young It might have been from pics in the sports page.

One Thursday night 3 guys approached Joe outside Broussard Hall. Some issue over a young woman. All 3 jumped Joe with knives. He left one lying in gutter bleeding. The other 2 were hiding in bushes, and wouldn't come out until police assured them that Joe was subdued. Saturday night rushed for a pile of yards...stitches and all.
