With 7 mins and 12 second left in 3rd quarter LSU defense held Florida to 1.2 yards per rush attempt from then on.

17 yard on 14 runs.

And a 42.6 completion percentage.

0 points!!!

Can we start games with this switch flipped on?

Aranda just needs to dial up pressure with stunts and blitzes.

They'd be doing so from a large deficit

Possibly. But the way we are doing it is winning games comfortably.

I really do feel like our whole staff is playing 4-D chess this year. The things they are doing (like not always sending pressure, or holding players out of meaningless games, or slowing the pace to keep D fresh) may not always/immediately go over well, but I think they are working their master plan to perfection.

I feel like this used to be the Pete Carroll strategy at USC. They would have a pretty vanilla defense for the first half and then put the boot on their throat in the second half. Maybe that's one of those pieces Orgeron picked up from his stint in California.

Defensive rankings mean jack shite if you aren't winning football games.

I could care less if we finish #60 in total defense if we make it to the playoffs.

Would I be concerned? yes. But our formula is winning and winning big against some good teams. Let's keep it going.

What's most impressive about that is the defense should have been GASSED at that point. UF was going on continuously long drives and you would expect in the late 3rd.4th quarter our D just wouldn't be able to get off the field, but they were able to.

Aranda and the staff are going to have to figure out how to get Brooks on the field with Chaisson more.

Brooks was the best pass rusher on the field Saturday when he saw snaps.

This shift has been pretty apparent. Stopping the new offenses is almost impossible, slowing them down enough to outscore them is doable by the best DCs.

You almost have to throw out everything you remember about the old way defenses were played.

I have thought this too, but I also think it's part of the chess match. Their offense tries to do different things than what Aranda has likely prepared for them to do, so adjustments have to be made. They also make offensive adjustments at half, so it takes some strategy to figure out a scheme to shut them down once and for all. I am happy Aranda is here. There are more and more genius coaches coming out every year.

Being a DC now has got to be miserable. Some of the greatest minds in football are giving up points.

Now, when you look at the NFL you see some success and I am not sure how that translates back down to the NCAA game. RPOs are more lenient in the college game but I doubt that accounts for all of it.

I definitely think Aranda is trying to work on some zone concepts. If we were able to get pressure with 4, it would be working a lot better, imo. He can't just pull it out against Bama and expect it to look great.

The lack of pressure the line got in the first half was frustrating. They got stoned right at the line every single time.

When Brooks came alive in the 2nd half is when they finally started getting to the QB.

The holding played a huge part in lack of pressure

I agree, and if so, this is a really big deal.

Often in years past it has seemed that the coaching staff was only focused on reaching a certain total in the Win column and not on maximizing the available talent, resources, etc over the season.

My best evidence for the change is the first half against NW St. In years past I think we would have overwhelmed that less talented opponent with defensive pressure, which would have resulted in fewer positive plays for them but also in less learning/practice for our inexperienced DBs and LBs.

If Orgeron allowed that to happen, despite it probably pissing him off to see NW move the ball against us, that represents a maturation and a real improvement that might put us over the top.
