I remember sitting at the SEC Championship game and watching LSU beat Tennessee for the SEC Championship with Mat Mauck running thr ball up the middle, against 2 1st round draft choices on Chavis' Tennessee defense. The guy was very over rated and predictable. Miles would have won at least 2 more SEC titled with out him. He started Welter and left people like Debo Jones and Beckwith on the bench. Thanks for Aranda

Chavis and that defense carried a bad offense and won a lot of games. Chavis was really good at LSU

Chavis was 90% good at LSU, but I sure as HELL wouldn't trade Dave Aranda for any DC in the country.

Not a fan of Chavis and how he left LSU. The man's defenses did choke at the end of a few Bama games, but over all they were always elite and did more to help Miles keep his job rather than prevent him, no pun intended, from winning additional championships. IMO, with out Chavis or a DC along the same calibre, Miles very likely would have been fired by the end of 2010!

Check out the defensive stats!

2008-#65, 25.9 pts/game (year prior to Chavis with Malveto experiment)
2009 -#11, 16.2 pts/game
2010 - #11, 18.2 pts/game
2011 - #2, 11.3 pts/game
2012- #12, 17.5 pts/game
2013- #21, 22 pts/game
2014- #3, 16.4 pts/game
2015 - #44, 24 pts/game year after Chavis with Steele
2016 - #6, 16.4 pts/game Aranda
2017 - #16, 18.8 pts/game Aranda

He was a match for Miles. Good, but not going to win championships. His defense could shut you down most of the day, but when you were down less than a score with 5 min left you could count on him letting you win. If I had to watch us have the game in hand only to go into a prevent defense and let the opponent march all the way in nearly untouched again, I would lose my mind. Once could be a mistake, but he kept on doing it in crucial games.

In the end, he was part of what kept us out of championships and keeping Miles longer than we should have.

Yall are nuts. Chavis was an excellent coordinator. When the spread offenses proliferated Chavis had the only defense in the country that could contain ANY offense - and they did.

. Didn’t chavis coordinate the 2011 defense? That defense is in discussion for the best defense Ever at LSU

The head coach decides who starts not the coordinator. Miles apologist love to do this, they blame assistants and coordinators for anything negative that happened under him they’ve even blamed QBs for his clock management. If you were to believe what these people say Miles entire job would be dressing up in LSU gear and putting on a headset. Miles was responsible for Welter and Debo not Chavis.

Was not happy to see Third and Chavis leave. But in his defense it might have helped in a lot of the close losses if the offense could have sustained more drives. The defense would be gassed in the fourth and the prevent only prevented us from winning. Previous unemployed coach's ability to hire a GOOD offensive co ordinator and then develop a quarterback really hurt the team all around.

Have watched the Tigers ever since I was a Kid I remember the Wyoming-LSU Sugar Bowl....But the years of poor qb play was unbearable. Marcus Randall, Jordan Jefferson, and of course Brandon. It was just poor talent evaluation and the inability to coach.

Think Chavis got tired of seeing his defense folding after being on the field for far to many plays.

He did that until Jones and Beckwith learned their reads and assignments well enough to not be a liability.

Ever play football in high school? Having to think too much completely takes away any physical/athletic advantage. That's the only reason Welter started for as long as he did.............

Because the head coach decides who his starters are not coordinators.
