Days until LSU spring practice: 12 — same as number of starters lost from 2017

Determining a team's "starters lost" and "starters returning" is a yearly dilemma.
Do you count as returning starters those players who began the season as reserves only to end it as starters because of injury, suspension, etc.? These would be guys like LB Tyler Taylor, LT Saahdiq Charles and edge rusher K'Lavon Chaisson. Do you count a guy like Kevin Toliver as a "starter lost"? He served as LSU's No. 3 cornerback, getting significant playing time but only starting five of 13 games.
What about a guy like Michael Divinity? He started one game this past season after serving as the Tigers' No. 1 F-OLB as a freshman in 2016. Is he a returning starter?
In our first of this 12-part series, we analyze each of the 12 "open" spots as the Tigers rev up for spring practice in what will likely be our most expansive of the 12 posts.

First couple games may be a little spotty. Will be a tough coaching job this year for sure.

Some issues with this
How do you count Donte Jackson twice? Either you go off our nickel package and count Tolliver as a starter or you go off base and count Thompson as a starter but you can’t say Donte is CB and Nickelback. He can only be on the field once.
And KJ Malone started the season as a starter but Charles took over he position and played kept it even once Malone was healthy. Idk how you count him as a starter.

Who is making excuses here? That isn't any sort of unprecedented turnover and the defense looks to have plenty of depth and experience.
If the new offensive line can gel early this should be a pretty good team

Some of that is addressed in the content of the article.
But counting Jackson twice is beyond silly.
