Daronte Jones base defense
Posted by NamariTiger on 8/3/21 at 11:05 am996
After looking at his time in Minnesota and Cincy and based on our personnel make up, I believe it’ll be a Gap attacking 4-2-5 defense with base 6. (Cover 2 + Cover 4). If mastered, this defense is a pain in the arse for the offense.
You’ll see a lot of this. ^
Basically what you get is Ricks and Ward in Quarters coverage. Ward will cheat to the numbers side to bait QBs to the Half coverage side. DEs will be playing 7s and sometimes wide 9s depending on down and distance. The SS will have a lot of force duties so he needs to be physical. I think Flott will be beaten out by McGlothern and Sage because they fit the bill for that spot. The other overhang position needs to be great in space and coverage. Must be a good tackler due to weak side duties. We could see Sage and McGlothern on the field at times but as of now it appears to be Major Burns. And last but not least playing half the field by himself will be D-Sting! Of course this is only a base package and they will mix things up but I expect to see a lot of this. The only route typically given up in this coverage is the play side flat which usually is the furthest throw for the QB for the least amount of yards.
The alignment will be different for 10 personnel 2X2 which is more common than Trips.

This is great. Send more designs with blitzes. Love the explanation

McGlothern is not a slot CB; it's a different discipline than playing outside CB. Your options at Slot CB are Flott, Sage, and Pig.

Totally forgot about Pig but what I’m saying is that strong overhang isn’t a traditional cover nickel. He needs to be a dog. He’s going to have to fight tight ends and through crack blocks for screens. Dwight can play either or and sometimes he will line up in that spot whether is for coverage or blitzing. Think Chauncey Gardner Johnson for the Saints. He can play Corner, Safety and Nickel.

In that case you might see a McGlothern. Alabama will definitely try to isolate Jahleel Billingsley on a weaker CB option.
We also need either Toles, Burns, and/or Davis to emerge as backend cerebral all-around SS similar to Vikings' Harrison Smith.

After watching a lot of last years games- yes scheme was a major issue but we need some of these young DBs to step up.
Really hope Sage and Davis can contribute day 1.
We will be substantially better if sage is ready to play day 1 at nickel

I’ve heard Burns is the SS. I like Mike Jones being used as a weak side safety and a rover.

Great post, keep them coming. I think BJ Ojulari will benefit from those wide positions at DE?

Eh, is it anymore?
I dont Think it’s ever a bad thing to have a strong, long and athletic corner covering anyone.
Slot recovers aren’t the same anymore. And teams move their #1 WR there often enough that it definitely blurs the lines.
You could get away with a smaller guy who was more agile than fast when slot recovers were usually smaller guys who were more agile than fast.
But if you’re trying to tell me Stingley isn’t the best option to cover any WR because he’s an “outside” CB I dont Believe you. Same with McG.
This whole concept that there are Outside CBs Nickelbacks is sorta nonsense.

So Coach O mentioned that Daronte is from the Mike Zimmer school of defense. I looked up Vikings pass defense in this video came up. I'm interested in seeing what blitz packages Daronte can create. Watching the spring game, I did come away impressed with how well the defense looked playing zone.

Absolutely not, do you research please. An outside/boundary CB usually has to defend 1/4 of the field, with safety help over top and the sideline essentially being an extra defender. Bigger CBs can use their bodies to shield the WR on the boundary.
A slot/Nickel has to be able to defend the whole field (screens, sluggos, drags, blitz, run support) they don’t have the sideline as an extra defender; they have to exceptional at press and trail.
I’m not saying McGlothern can’t play slot, I just don’t believe he’ll get reps over Flott, Sage, and Pig. You needs a lot reps top excel at the slot CB. McGlothern is CB3.

Sage will def beat out flott.
I think it will be ward at free and burns at strong.
Sage at nickel.

I don't see McGlothern playing that role.
I think it's sage from day one.
McGlothern will be your backup a th outside corner or dime.

1. Outside WRs can and do run drags and sluggo routes. If your in man, you defend wherever your WRs goes.
2. Being bigger helps in run support not just shielding a boundry.
3. The things that make you a good outside Cb are the things that make you a good CB. Size, speed, athleticism, strength fluidity.
And most corner blitzes are based on just the element of surprise and speed.
4. Almost every team puts their 3rd best CB out there at Nickel. Unless you hve someone realy special like TM7 and his value was that he could tackle like an OLB and cover like a CB.
5. And I am Not saying you can’t make an argument for sage, but Flott was a straight up liability last year. Because you can run deep routes from The slot.

LOL. Bro, it's not the hard to comprehend.
1. Yes, this is true, but the primary function of X and and Z is to stretch the field vertically to free the underneath for the Z (TE) and slot.
2. No, it doesn't. Tackling ability and willingness to tackle are good traits for slot CBs. Eli Ricks would get murdered if had to run support. On the hand, Pig was great in run support at Nicholls (11 TFLs)
3. Refer to previous post. There's crossover but the leverage and technique are different. Its all about reps and/or time on task. Flott, Sage, and Pig will split reps between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd teams. If Stingley or Ricks goes down, McGlothern has to be ready to go in.

So if we had 3 Stingley a you wouldn’t put all 3 on the field?
The only question is if McGlothrin can beat out Flott, sage and Pig.
Because At the end of the day, you have to cover. We aren’t putting a guy who weigh tha 170 pounds out there because we want to be strong against the run. And if you’re a great tackler and can’t cover, teams aren’t going to run at you.
Because that slot recovers may be Devonta Smith. And if you can cover vertically, it will be.

You just don’t have a very good grasp of positional football. This isn’t Madden. Check back with me after September 4.

Go look at the NFL.
90% of the guys who play nickel played Outside Cb in college.
Almost like putting 3 great athletes on the field is the best way to cover 3 other atheletes on the field.
Ust as slot WR are going to come in different shapes and sized, slot CB have to too. But we do know long, strong and athletic is probably the best way to cover anyone.
And Sage is an elite athlete, so he might be that guy but based on last year there is no reason to believe Flott is.
