re: Column: The case for Jarrett Lee

offensive stats were bumped up last year because we were always playing from in a big hole, trying to come back and get back into the games. This year we haven't been playing from so much of a hole, so the play calling has been rediculously conservative and that is PART of the reason offensive stats are so much lower.

Great column and I couldn't agree more.

quote:tiger88 - I believe you are interpreting what Carl is saying here. Facing the music is in response to Lee stepping up and being a man an accepting responsibility for his performance on the field. Unlike JJ who asked the coaches to not have to face the media in his responsee to poor play. Playing QB requires a lot of maturity and hiding from the media is not exactly displaying maturity and confidence.
Lee faced the music?

When would you like to proceed with this Jarret Lee experiment? Against Auburn while we are still in the race for the SEC west title?

Lee played poorly for much of 2008, but he wasn't worse than Jefferson in 2009, in my opinion. He was called on to try to win games with his arm, and if the defense would have been better, there's no way he would have thrown as many interceptions. He threw so many, IN PART, because the game situations he was in called for him to do so. So in that sense, neither he nor the coaches really did anything wrong (although I do think the coaches should have made it a little easier on him last year, and substituted with Jefferson more often).
Thus, I really don't think you need to resort to the character and improvement argument to be in favor of playing Lee. I would make the case that Lee played better last year than Jefferson is playing this year, and that given the current game situations with LSU's caliber of defense, he's smart enough not to take as many chances as he was forced to do in 2008.
Just my two cents...

Reasonably stated Doc Stanton. And you may have answered this somewhere in the many threads which have touched on the subject (if so, I apologize for asking again) - but are you in favor of an outright start for Lee beginning this week or for a couple of series?

Outright start.
I think Jefferson needs to sit out for a few weeks, so that he has the time to really concentrate on the basics of how to drop back and move in the pocket, and how to find receivers hitting seams deep down the field, rather than just concentrating on slant and stop routes.
If he comes back and starts against Tulane or Bama as LSU's exclusive throwing QB, I'm fine with that, but the coaches need to give him some time off to learn to be more competent in the deep passing game, in my opinion.
It is possible that starting Lee might lose games for LSU (if LSU tries to start having a pro-type passing game again), or that starting Shepard might lose games for LSU (if LSU keeps the same passing game it has now), but even so, I think that starting one of those two guys will help the offense develop better in the long-term.
The bottom line for me is this: If you have 3 QBs who could legitimately be considered starters when next year rolls around, it's just wrong to waste time doing and practicing stuff that you know won't be adequate for next year's team.
Not that I'm saying that this team still can't win 10 or 11 games in the regular season, but (1) it's a stretch, and (2) even if LSU does go 11-1, you've still got to continue developing the offense for next year.

And part of the reason why all this settling for a third-rate offensive strategy is so frustrating for me, is because I think the program as a whole is very close to being a NC contender again--much closer than most other posters around here think. I guess you can say I'm a "positiger" in that regard, but the other side of the coin of that kind of thinking is this: it is times such as these when I get the most fanatical about LSU football.
The program is close to competing for a NC next year or the year after, in my opinion, and the coaches are just doing something stupid to hold back this awesome potential. The defense is in place--just get the offense back to where it was last year or the year before, and LSU is back as a serious national contender. That's all that needs to be done. It just seems to me like the Tigers are so close, that I don't want to see them start to backslide now.
P.S. -- My anti-Saban meltdowns in 2002 and the first half of 2003 were legendary, for what it's worth.

Excellent column, Carl.
I don't think Miles will give Lee the time on the field for the same reason he didn't give Jefferson time on the field last year until Lee got hurt.
Miles is stubborn. He has said this more than once in press conferences. He picks someone, and that is it, he stays with them, at least as far a quarterback is concerned.
Lee should be given time this season just like Jefferson should have been given time last year. No, there is no need to go to the two quarterback system. Just give both a try since both, at different times, did not have what it takes.
Using two quarterbacks means you have no quarterback, and Les Miles is not going to go that route.
It is a shame....for those receivers who don't get the ball....and for the running backs who don't see holes loosen up....and for an offensive line who lines up against a defense that knows what play is coming next.

Thanks Doc. I respect your position. Can't say I completely agree with it. (I'd give JL a series a half to see how he looks). But it's a reasoned one.

If the Auburn game is tight then I don't think we see Lee. Hopefully he gets some PT against Tulane then just take things from there.

Isn't that what basically did Dinardo in???
At the Florida game I sat with my face in my hands whispering "please put Lee in" (this was after numerous 3 and outs and sacks of JJ. It wasn't anything against JJ ... it was just "if it's not working try something different".
But hell, I'm a girl and don't know shite ... BUT I know I'm right with if it's not working you gotta change something ... like Bama did with Ingram during the Bama/SC game yesterday.

you and about a million other LSU fans. You'd think, at some point, like prayer, it might actually have some effect on Miles, but like I wrote earlier, he seems to be acting like some robotron this year: "everything is pre-programmed. change does not compute."

I agree with this article.

Why does LSU traditionally have such trouble recruiting big name QBs? You would think LSU would have produced a star QB by now, and please don't tell me any of you believe JeMarius Russell is a star.

Say what???
Look, if he is an LSU guy I'm pulling for him to do well and I don't care who gets the job done as long as it gets done.
Having said that, I can't agree with your statement. I'm no expert, but each QB has had 8 starts and Lee is 4-4 with 14 TDS, 16 ints, and 7 of those were returned for TDs.
JJ is 6-2 with 11 TDs, 3 ints, and none returned for TDs.
I done see how we can just gloss over 13 more ints with 7 resulting in quick 6 TDs and say: " Lee played poorly for much of 2008, but he wasn't worse than Jefferson in 2009".

Great perspective Carl. I was in Tiger Stadium at the Florida game and when I saw all of the WR's open deep and JJ wouldn't throw it to them, I knew they were playing scared and not to win.
I say that Les Miles should take his own advice and "Let er Rip"! We've got the tools, but Jordan needs to be spelled from time to time to settle him down and J. Lee is just the ticket.
