College football's 10 best, worst coaching contracts

ED ORGERON, LSU (UNDERPAID)
quote:
Annual salary: $4 million
Buyout as of April 1, 2019 (estimated): $10 million
Details: After three seasons with the Tigers, Orgeron has led LSU to a 25-9 overall mark in his 34 games as head coach. In those 25 victories, 11 came against nationally-ranked competition and five were over Top 5 opponents. Orgeron's new deal will pay him $4 million a year — up from $3.5 million — through March 2023 with an additional $400,000 in incentives and a $10 million buyout. Per NOLA.com, "the buyout decreases $250,000 per month, so it will be $7 million next March and then would stay at a flat $4 million by March 2021."
quote:
JIMBO FISHER, TEXAS A&M (OVERPAID)
quote:
Annual salary: $7.5 million
Buyout as of April 1, 2019: $68 million
Details: Full disclosure — Fisher is going to get the Aggies to the College Football Playoff very soon, but his gargantuan buyout is nearly double the nearest head coach in college football (Dabo Swinney, $35 million) and signing anyone to a 10-year deal out of the gate is a stretch. Texas A&M sweetened its offer and lured Fisher away from Florida State because it believes hiring one of the few active head coaches with a national championship will pay dividends down the road. It should, but $75 million is quite an investment when Alabama, LSU and Auburn are in the same division and the schedule will never be conducive to long-term success unless the Aggies become a perennial powerhouse.
quote:
GUS MALZAHN, AUBURN (OVERPAID)
quote:
Annual salary: $6.7 million
Buyout as of April 1, 2019 (estimated): $32 million
Details: The Tigers are moving forward with Malzahn under the presumption the 2019 season needs to be a successful one on the Plains. His extremely costly buyout, fifth-most nationally, makes this a bad deal after Auburn jumped the gun after the 2017 season with a new seven-year, $49 million contract. Malzahn won an SEC championship and took Auburn to the BCS Championship Game in 2013, his first season as head coach. Since winning the West that year, he has posted one 10-win campaign and is 21-19 overall against league competition.

I’ll concede our ball coach is underpaid when he brings home an 11 win season this year. Until then I think he should be thankful to even have the opportunity to be LSU’s head coach

Easy question. Who besides LSU would pay Ed more than $4 million? In fact, who besides LSU would even pay him $3 million?

It blows my mind that in this country we pay coaches millions per year

I think he is paid about right. He's done well enough so far but his whole thing was to take less and use that money to get the best coordinators.

We are still averaging 3 losses a year right now under O so the jury is still out. I really do think that changes this year though and we have a really good season with at least 10 regular season wins.

If that was his record and he DID NOT UNDERACHIEVE ie TROY, MSU, TAMU (Jimbo wins in first meeting), 0-2 versus Mullins, etc. should I continue?

Ed’s doing a really good job so far. Jimbo is too. Jimbo is overpaid, Ed is not overpaid

the media wants this to happen soooooo bad and he’s never going to come close. He’ll never lose fewer than 2 games

Who besides LSU would have even interviewed O for a head coach position?

quote:Easy answer. Any Power-5 team who hasn't had a Top-10 finish or a Top-10 recruiting class in 10 years.

Many USC people would take Ed at that and more at this moment. We will see how they feel in about three years or so.

Yep get that popcorn. Time for the Gump shadows stuff in some cosmic union with Negam...f...t...s to take this thread to new lows. Bring it cockroaches!!

Yes but I maintain USC more so. They wished they had O prowling the recruiting grounds on the West Coast now. They would have 25% of our recruiting stuff and shutting out Oregon Ducks and the rest of Pac 12 from poaching LA.

Child please! Past tense. Keep up with reality and up to the minute happenings. Geaux back to watching cartoons while adults discuss life.

Why is it so black and white?

Some LSU fans hatred for LSU coaches is amazing.

That’s because we have this thing called capitalism in this country.
Don’t like it? Move to a socialist or communist country where they have a planned economy manipulated by the central government.

The lowest common denominator is something else. Add in Gump imposters and it is hilarious. I maintain and will continue to maintain there is a very small minority of effed up POS who circle jerk off to the fantasy of after LSU wins its next NC in football the next day it fires the HC. I am not kidding.
