College Baseball Umpiring.

Is the batters clock a new rule? Or is this some obscure rule that’s always been there but the umpires are now choosing to selectively enforce when they are butthurt about a team, player or coach? I saw a UF batter got called out by an umpire the other day for stepping out of the box in between pitches. It looked extremely childish by the umpire. Is this a league directive or are these Umpires taking things in their own hands?

More childish than the box marshals?

Did you see it happen to Jobert this weekend too?
Jeff Head made a shite call on a check swing that Jobert didnt like, so he stepped out of the box to collect himself. Head pulled out the stopwatch then called him out.

It’s a little of both.
I asked a college umpire friend of mine about it the other day. They are feeling a lot of pressure to enforce the speed of game rules (pitch clock and batters box)- both of which are stupid and both of which most umpires hate.
On the other hand, like with all rules and officials, some of them forget that the game plays itself without them and they decide to overemphasize a rule to become part of the show

Yea I saw the Jobert situation and thought it was just a dick umpire move. But then when I saw the UF situation it sparked me to make this thread bc it seems to be a trend. Not just one dick umpire.

Rule has been around for several years, just rarely enforced. Or should I say, enforced when the ump feels the need to have a look at me moment. Not sure if it's still there, but there was a clock in center field that would countdown from 20 seconds.

Yea but they only seem to enforce it when they are already butthurt about something which makes it vindictive enforcement. Gonna be a problem going forward for sure. League needs to get these guys under control

Same ump apparently.
So just a douche on a power trip.

I don’t like the rule at all because I just think you are fighting a losing battle. You will never speed up the game enough to please the people that find that the issue with the sport. It’s a slow paced game and it will always turn people away.

I’ve been seeing it happen a lot more the last few weeks. It’s definitely the league telling officials, that they need to be more enforcing on those kinds of rules.

I get it, but you can find a time to "enforece" it that is not bases loaded, 2 outs, 2 strikes in a 1 run game.
That was fricking chickenshit and I'd ding the home plate ump if I were coaching.

Yup - and that kind of call is gonna get benches up in arms and arguing for 45-60 seconds.. so to speed up the game 2-5 seconds they're gonna slow it down for 10x that amount.
It's fricking bullshite and rolling down hill from MLB, which is becoming unwatchable.

??. High cheese when the catcher is “expecting” a sinker. “Oops. Sorry, Blue. Now get up quick. Gotta keep the game moving.”

The biggest part that gets me, is it the 3rd base umpires job to regulate the batter stepping out? Seems like that would be the plate umpires duty to me.
I guess some people just want to be a dick.

To be completely honest, I do hate when batters have to step out after every single pitch and adjust their gloves every time and do some superstitious rituals.
But that umpire would never have made that call if he wasn’t being a complete arse this weekend. Jobert didn’t like the call and the ump got offended and butt hurt.

frick UMP Jeff 'Dick' Head if you warn the pitcher warn the batter! Completely changed the game at that point

This is the third year of the rule and it seems like it is an unofficial point of emphasis this year.
The problem I have is that
1) It's really a 15 second clock for the batter but a 20 second clock for the pitcher
2) The pitcher gets a warning but the batter does not.

The rule does not allow a warning for the batter.
This needs to change.
