And 5.8 a year.
Am I wrong?
Well I know I'm wrong.
But is my math wrong?

With a deal like this, it likely replaces his old contract.

Extension usually means the terms of the previous contract have been extended to the new terms for the given price. So no you do not add the terms together.

Isn't O's new guaranteed salary $6 mil a year and not $7mil a year? That &42 mil amount over 6 years is a maximum and not a minimum.

Old contract voided. New contract signed which has updated terms, salary, bonuses etc.

Nah, current contract will be amended not voided. Sections (dates, base, incentives, etc.) of current contract changed to new terms. Sections such as sports camps, duties, termination clauses (and many others) will not change unless the change was negotiated. There is no voiding...only amendments or a termination of agreement. He's gone if the agreement is terminated by either party.

For all intents and purposes, the new deal replaces the old one. You have added nothing to the discussion.

Is this necessary on a sports message board? The old contract is invalid for all intents and purposes. Call it what you will

Yes, O's average salary for the duration of this particular contract is now at 6 million per year when you add remaining money with new money.

It came out that the value of this deal is worth 42 million. If it replaces the current one, that means the value is spread over 8 years.
I'm not arguing one way or the other, just saying the right answer changes the annual amount.
