I would not be shocked to see some teams start using wood bats. If one does and is noticeably stronger at the plate, we will see other top tier programs switch to wood bats for games.
Until a shard of wood from a broken bat sticks a player in the neck and kills them....then we're back where we started...
I say we play in the PMAC with nerf balls...

Wiffle ball is the way to go, and every fielder needs to go out dressed like a hockey goalie.

I really like the rule change and I'm an LSU fan. Stop whining and adapt.

One of the issues I see is a complete lack of fundamentals by pitchers at all levels. When I was taught to pitch, I was taught to finish my delivery by having my body square to home plate and ready to receive a hit. Essentially, I was required to be in a shortstop ready position after every pitch.
Most pitchers do not finish the delivery movement and prepare themselves to receive a ball from the bat. There are guys standing upright with their backs turned, sideways, and several other vulnerable positions.
The injuries are few and far between and could be less if pitchers would prepare themselves to receive a hit.
And how long did those fundamentals allow you to pitch in the majors?

The NCAA started regulated the power of college metal bats over a decade ago. The are not "hotter than ever." That is why you don't see a team hitting 140 home runs in a season like we used to see.
The main change was not the pop of the bat. They reduced the bat from a 2-3/4 inch barrel to 2-5/8. They may have also reduced the allowable length minus weight (not sure what they call that).

The new requirement is the first one regarding the material used in the bat. Now bats must be made of a composite of ceramic/plastic rather than metal.

People, if you don't want to get hurt playing a sport, then don't play.
What's gonna happen when the first player gets hit it then head with a ball off one of these new bats? Will the NCAA make them start using broomsticks?
Geez, you can't hit anybody hard in the NFL w/o getting suspended or penalized and now the homerun is non-existent in college baseball. Never thought I'd see this day.

Why dont we just use wiffle balls? That way we dont even need an outfield and can save on scholly's. They can even use the new plastic bats and just make the barrel bigger. Its a win win..

WTF is with this rule and why is it implemented? WOW
Who knows what the NCAA is thinking? They keep tinkering with success so much that we will go back to the 50's and 60's where college Baseball was a non interest. Maybe thats what those so called intellectuals they call college presidents or chancellors really want is to dissolve a good thing to save "MONEY".

Since when has college ever used 2-3/4 bats. As far as I know it has always been 2-5/8.
Anyway, my son tells me the new metal bats have about the same "sweet" spot as last yr's models, but the ball just seems to die (has no carry). They've only swung the new bats a couple times this fall, been swinging wood bats all fall. But, his initial reaction to the new bats was, a lot bigger sweet spot compared to wood, but a lot less carry compared to wood.

I just read all 9 pages of this thread and while some of it is funny, some is dissapointing.
I can tell you that it is about time for the bat change. It may not be as exciting for fans, but it is not as dangerous for pitchers.. it also has the side benefit of allowing pitchers to pitch inside more-- it makes the game closer to the pro game. While some may not like that, it does reduce one major argument that MLB uses when recruiting pitchers-- that pitchers dont learn to pitch inside and learn to establish a fastball in college.

im not reading this whole thread, it just got stupid
but i was reading twitter one day, and one of the Baseball America guys mentioned that in the NCAA rule book, a player could actually use a wood bat if they wanted.
if these bats are really dead, i think they should ask Jack Mariucci for a small donation and try them out.

I forgot to add that former Tiger baseball player Trey McClure was the guest speaker. He relived some great baseball moments for the audience, including several humorous Skip Bertman anecdotes. I'd repeat them here but it was McClure's imitating Skip's voice and mannerisms that made it so funny.
One story which transcends Skip's voice was in 1997 (I think that is what McClure said) when LSU's first game was in the Superdome in the Winn Dixie Classic. The pitcher, Dan Guillory, was known for his great fastball........and lack of control.
On the first pitch of the game, Guillory beaned the hitter square on the helmet! Skip comes ambling out of the dugout, gets to the pitcher's mound and says, "Ok, Guillory, I'll see you in about three months."
Then Skip calls in a relief pitcher.

Until 1998 they used 2 3/4 and could have a -5 ratio. After the title game that year was 21-14 they changed to 2 5/8 and -3.

They'd hit more HRs with wood, might as well make the switch
