Not sure if I spelled name correct. Would he had won a championship at LSU if Florida didn't get him fo their AD job. I think he wins multiple championships , if he could keep up with the recruiting part of job. He was up in age for job. If we had got him earlier in his career we def win a few. Had some great defenses at Miami

He left LSU, then decided to become the FLA AD. He didn't leave LSU for FLA. He was a great defensive coach, but he hated to recruit. He belonged in the NFL.

Arnsparger was a solid coach, particularly on defense, but the Tigers had some great offensive teams under his leadership as well.

Not likely. Hell losing to Miami of Ohio likes to cause a riot much less Tulane.
He did win 2 SECs.

His biggest weakness was recruiting. He didn’t.

I don't think he would have won a NC at LSU, possibly another SECC.

If he hadn't recommended Archer then went to UF and hired Spurrier, Spurrier most likely would have ended up the HBC at LSU.

I knew Bill Arnsbarger well enough to know he was tired of coaching. he was a damn good coach (except for bowl games) and he was a better recruiter than mentioned on here.

he was tired of coaching but not ready to retire. he made a big push to be the AD at LSU. at that time LSU had a strong aversion to hiring ex football coaches as their AD. frankly, I agreed with that as the positions are very very different and require much different skill sets. the powers to be did not feel he would be a good AD and would not hire him. after we turned him down, Florida surprised everyone and offered him their AD job. i'm not sure if he's the guy that hired Spurrier but if so if was blind luck. the guy was not a good AD; I don't think he could balance his checkbook (figuratively speaking) and did not have the patience of a businessman or manager of people, which is what the position of AD basically is. you have to understand how poor of an athletic program Florida was in those days, on and off the field. he took the job as a "reward" position while others in the department did the work; almost a figurehead.

but he and his wife were nice people and he did well at LSU while he was here. if he had not lost the "fire in his belly" he would have continued to win titles at LSU. and lose bowl games. he just didn't like bowls and viewed them as games to allow his players and coaches to relax and have fun; basically a reward for a long and good season.

One ('86) - our first since '70. He left after '86. We would win another in '88 under Archer.

IMO yes.

Let me 'splain.

By the time he began ('84) LSU was fully integrated. Well before Saban, Bill saw the potential at LSU. He also transitioned us from a beating rivals-bowl metric of success to a championship metric.

FTR, never lost to Bama; never won a bowl game.

i'm not sure what you mean by this.

hiring coaches is a crapshoot; hell, hiring employees is too. at that time Mike Archer was an up and comer and had the potential to be a good hire. LSU had a lot of respect for Arnbarger's football savvy (as they should have) and went with his suggestion. it just didn't work out.

as far as Spurrier goes, I have seen no proof that he was interested in becoming the LSU HC. he was a Florida boy thru and thru; great player there and loved the school. Spurrier wanted out at Duke and I think he would have gone to Florida even if you were the AD (or me).
