According to Hanagriff today - If Etling went down right now with an injury, Justin McMillan would likely be his replacement.

If Etling remains healthy, look for Brennan to receive some early snaps in a game, not just mop up duty. Orgeron only verified what sources have been saying throughout practices Hanagriff noted, that Brennan continues to impress everyone on the field, fully expect him to be the no.2 by mid season.

Also the most impressive kick, punt returner thus far, has been Clyde Edwards-Helaire, but he got a bit dinged up in practice.

If LSU's defensive coaches are impressed with Brennan, its probably due to his quick release, can't get to him fast enough.

I was impressed at his throws outside the hash in the UA All American game.

I thought he had a wonky form to his throws, too much going on, but he was on point. Not sure if that's been polished up or not, but a fast release is always a bonus no matter what it looks like.

That sounds like the DJ Shockley or Tim Tebow plan. Interesting.

I don't understand how this works and never have understood people calling for backups to get "meaningful" snaps when the starter is healthy and not terrible. If Etling is healthy and not doing terribly, why would anyone else get snaps other than in mop up duty? I want to win first and foremost.

I can see this when the other QB offers something else than the starter, a Flynn/Perrilloux situation.

For sure, agreed. But that really isn't what we have here is it?

I can see why we LSU fans would be unfamiliar with this concept given that we just had Les Miles refuse to blow out inferior opponents or work on the passing game in the patsy games, but it actually helps your young qbs develop. So when we are up 21 on Chattanooga, Myles can come in and throw a few passes against live action, so that when he laces it up for the first time as a starter in a year or two, he isn't like Phil Rivers coming in for a concussed Mett against Washington.

No, not at all. So I'm not sure the statement holds water, unless Brennan is THAT good. And if that's the case, why not just make him the #2?

Right, but OP's info is premised on Brennan getting snaps in situations that aren't mop-up duty, which being up 21 on McNeese absolutely is. I'm all for a backup getting snaps when the game is out of hand. I'm not all for a backup getting snaps when he doesn't bring anything different or better to the table than the starter or the starter is healthy and the game isn't out of hand.

We'll have to see how it is done in practice, but if the guy comes in against Chattanooga on drive 3 to try and lead a drive, I don't have a problem with that. This is as opposed to, we're up 49 points and we're just handing the ball away. that doesn't do anything to develop a QB in my opinion.

The reason this doesn't matter, it's not Hanagriff scouting Brennan, it's his football sources scouting him who are legit.

Let's also remember that this is a brand new system for EVERYONE, so even the senior QB needs as much game time possible before conference play. Mop up is the only time that makes sense to me.

If this happens, Etling is doing either awesome or terribly. So I guess I could conceivably be cool with it. I want Etling to be in a groove and for his confidence to be sky high to lead us to a championship. I don't see how that works if you he's being shuffled in and out for no reason other than to develop a QB who doesn't (hypothetically) bring anything different or better to the table than him at this point.

I guess we Brennan is really identified at the 2018 starter...otherwise it would be unwise to waste a redshirt year.

Redshirting qbs basically doesn't happen any more. They are either going to play or transfer before the redshirt issue ever comes up. Think about every LSU veteran qb that lost the job of starter since, I don't know, Flynn. They all have transferred out if they didn't play, e.g.,

Harris
Jennings
Rivers
Hatch
The fat kid that went to Moo State
Hayden Rettig

I'm fired up for this season so I can update the definitive LSU QB Power Ranking since 1990 list.

Didn't anyone read the article in the Advocate today? Coach O says the kid is special.

"Quarterback Myles Brennan is good enough to start at LSU as a freshman, coach Ed Orgeron said Wednesday night."

If you haven't read the whole piece do yourself a favor and go read it.
