One Reason Why Mississippi State Will Win.
At some point, the body blows are going to start to accumulate. LSU has been fantastic, but it’s had to deal with Ole Miss, at Florida, and Georgia in the last three weeks after already facing Miami and Auburn, too. The week off finally comes after this game. Meanwhile, Mississippi State has had two weeks off to rest up and recharge after coming up with an atomic drop on Auburn with a 23-9 win. And Nick Fitzgerald has had two weeks off to get healthy. The coaching staff finally turned him loose against the Tigers, and he responded with 195 rushing yards and two scores in the dominant performance. As amazing as LSU’s defense has been, it hasn’t had to deal with a dangerous rushing quarterback quite year. Georgia’s Justin Fields only ran once for three yards. On the other side, yes, it is time to start giving Joe Burrow a little bit of love and respect for what he’s doing working within the LSU offense, but he’s still struggling to hit half of his passes, and he hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in three of his last four games. He needs help from the running game. The Mississippi State run defense has been no joke, allowing 229 yards and four scores to Kentucky and Benny Snell, and no one else has run for a score on the Bulldogs. No one other than UK – including Auburn, Florida, and Kansas State – has been able to run for 120 yards.

One Reason Why LSU Will Win. It’s this simple. Mississippi State can’t throw. If it doesn’t run well, it’s not going to win. The Bulldogs have rushed for 220 yards or more four times, and won all four games. They were held to under 105 yards against Florida and Kentucky, and lost. LSU allowed more than 150 yards once, and Florida win after running for 215 yards. It’s now up to Devin White and the Tiger defensive front seven to attack Fitzgerald and get to him before he can get started. No one is playing better than White, who’s as fast a sideline-to-sideline linebacker as any in college football. Last year he made 11 tackles in the ugly 37-7 loss to the Bulldogs – he has seen this all before. The Tiger defensive front doesn’t generate a whole lot of pressure, but it doesn’t need to against the Bulldogs. Stay at home, clog the lanes, don’t give Fitzgerald too many options, and let White clean everything else up.

What’s Going To Happen. Yeah, LSU is in need of a break, but it’s also on a roll. The formula will still work. Don’t lose the turnover battle, stop the run, take advantage of every opportunity, and dominate on key downs. Mississippi State doesn’t take the ball away enough. It has forced just seven turnovers on the year, and while it has come up with five picks, they’ve been spread out over the first five games. Burrow won’t screw up enough to give this away, the LSU secondary will shut down the Bulldog passing game cold, and the run defense will take care of the rest.
