BATON ROUGE - It's been less than a year since Mike VII arrived on campus, but visitors at his enclosure have already dubbed him the most playful tiger, mostly because of encounters like the one that went viral over the weekend.

This video of Mike the Tiger pouncing towards a man caused everyone to want to experience it for themselves. Ginger Guttner with the LSU Vet School explained what's going on here. "He's an ambush predator, so they tend to attack from the back, so when people turn their backs to the glass, it does make him want to do that," said Guttner. When Mike first got to campus, he was only 11 months old. His playful, cub behavior prompted his caretakers to put up signs warning visitors to keep pets and stuffed animals away from him and not to do anything that's going to possibly make him hit the fence or the glass, because Mike could hurt himself. "It's not about breaking a rule, it's more about what's best for the tiger," said Guttner. According to Guttner, when he jumps up onto the glass, he risks breaking a tooth--causing him to be unable to eat and probably resulting in expensive dental surgery. "Tooth loss is the number one cause of death for tigers in the wild," said Guttner. She doesn't want to discourage visitors from enjoying the adolescent tiger, just to stop trying to get him to jump on the glass. "Mike likes to engage with his visitors, which we want to happen. We want people to go to the habitat and enjoy being around Mike, but there are certain things that people can do when they think they're playing with him that actually could cause him to do harm to himself, and those are the things that we want to avoid."

Can we bring him back to the field again for Pre-Game?

I'm All In on the new Mike. That baw is ready.
Go head bring him back into the stadium this year I'd bet he'll get in that cage no questions asked.

Which really means:
We are scared to death that glass will break and he will maul the cr@p out of someone and we will be liable!

This is literally why we can't have nice things

It’s not taking away the fun, dude.
It’s asking people to not taunt an animal to get him to attack you through the glass and fricking hurt himself. Don’t give PETA any more ammo.

Not just liable.
The day Mike injures someone is the last day LSU will EVER have a live tiger mascot.

I assume you're joking. They made it pretty clear what could happen with him lunging at the glass.. why would you want him to potentially get hurt?
I always see people over there doing this. It's going to be hard to get people to stop because they damn sure won't read the signs.
You want a broken tiger tooth on your conscience baw?!

Unfortunately it most likely was. Expect for this thread to bring out the dumbest of the dumb.

This generation of tigers are a bunch of pussies.

Back in January I saw him just laying around when a jogger in bright shirt ran by. He "chased" all the way across and when jigger came back he chased him again. Laser focused!

No! For the hundredth time (and possibly more), NO. LSU has repeatedly said since the start of the process of finding this Mike, and since he has gotten here, that this tradition is gone, done, over with, never to come back again no matter how much people ask or how well this or any future Mike does with his health and behavior.
I hate, just as much as the next fan, that we had to lose this tradition. And yes, it is likely due to the motives and pressure of groups like PETA and HSUS, which sucks, because these groups pretend to stand behind the “well intentioned” notions of preventing animal cruelty and abuse from those that would seek to intentionally harm, when that is only a small fraction of what they truly stand for. But if losing the on-field tradition means that we can continue the tradition of even having a live tiger, then I’m willing to accept it.

Way more than that. People just don't seem to get it or want to. It's incredible that they continue to bring it up. It's a done deal. Move on.

Me too, not that there is a real choice. It's the policy and there is zero that will change it. I don't know that it's all a PETA deal. The last Mike didn't like it and they decided not to force it. I think that had a lot to do with the decision to discontinue luring the tiger into the trailer. It's no longer up for debate.

"Tooth loss is the number one cause of death for tigers in the wild"
It's also the number one cause of death for Tigers in Missouri.
