Did I miss that? She was going to leave, so we bumped her pay.

Interesting.

Alleva offered her a whopping 4% cost of living increase. Auburn came in and talked to her so then Alleva had to give her a real raise.

This was a much more realistic threat than Miles to R-Kansas. That was the most ridiculous negotiating ploy I ever heard and Alleva fell for it hook line and sinker. I have no problem with the Torina deal.

Should have let her.

Don't get me wrong. She has proven herself to be a very good coach. But it doesn't make financial sense to pay big dollars (relatively speaking) for a product which doesn't make money.

Set a relative salary cap on the non-profit producing sports and use the savings to maximize your profitable products -- football, basketball and (at LSU) baseball.

It's called a loss leader. Having a national championship caliber coach in any sport is good for the athletics department as a whole solely for the added publicity

It would be laughable if O suddenly popped up and claimed that USC or Oregon State was negotiating with him. The scary part is that Alleva would probably believe him and offer up a contract extension and hefty increase in pay and buyout.

Respectively disagree. Softball is never going to make LSU any money anyways, so why not pay a little more to keep a coach who has had continued success and who has top 10 recruiting classes the next 5 years? She is going to have LSU in the national title hunt for the foreseeable future.

really comes down to regional/supers time if you make espn i think you probably get a good little chunk of change. especially when you look at cost of running the softball program compared to football, and basketball. i'm not sure the numbers so i could be wrong.

Didn't mean to infer that she was undeserving, she definitely is, just meant she likely leveraged another opening more than was actually interested in leaving.

Nah. It comes down to whether or not LSU is serious about being competitive in softball. If it wasn't, LSU wouldn't have built the new stadium that opened in 2009. Paying market rate for a head softball coach goes along with a commitment to being competitive, which LSU can afford.

She puts out a damn good product that makes me proud as hell of my school whenever I see them at play. This is literally everything I ask of a coach... Keeping her is the right move

Why do you think that it won't ever make money?

LSU has a nice stadium that is packed when the product is good. TV deals also make money for the athletics department especially the CWS

Keeping a good coach increases fan pride which will indirectly boost revenue.

Also, isn't it Alleva's job to ensure ALL LSU sports are successful?

Clint Myers has left Auburn’s program in disarray. His son was fired for sleeping with one of his players, some players were cut for drug-related reasons, and there are rumors that certain players’ parents were influencing how much playing time their kids got.
