re: Best True Freshmen Ever?
Vincent might not be the best ever, and he really only had one good year, but he was a beast as a Freshman when it mattered most.

Eta: Justin Vincent

Hodson was a redshirt freshman, but he was terrific. My choice would be the great Dalton Hilliard.

re: Best True Freshmen Ever?
Vincent had to take a red shirt initially out of high school. Or at least he sat out an entire year before emerging by midseason 2003 on the way to 1000+ yds and both an SEC championship and Sugar Bowl BCS national championship MVP awards. While undoubtedly legendary by the end of his first season suiting up, he would fail to match his 2003 total of over 1000 yds. between his remaining 3 years combined! Mathieu was incredible as a true freshman from the opening game vs North Carolina through the Cotton Bowl victory over A&M. As mentioned as well, Michael Clayton was pretty dang good and had some clutch moments as a freshman including game winner at Kentucky with like 14 seconds remaining. Laron Landry and Patrick Peterson on the defensive side come to mind.

It is difficult to compare a running back to a defensive back. If you never hear a DB's name, he is most likely great.

re: Best True Freshmen Ever?
Didn’t they say something during the last telecast that only 4(?) true freshmen have started game 1 for LSU defense?
That’s rare air.

I meant to start a thread about that. Anybody know who the others were ?

Peterson really wasn’t that impactful as a freshman. Was at nickel early and didn’t start until maybe the last 4 or so games.

Mark Roman had a really good freshman year, won SEC freshman of the year, had a ton of tackles and a good number of Ints. He’s up there as far as freshmen DBs go

imagine being a quarterback, already having to deal with Claiborne and PP7 on the outside, and then Mathieu fricks you up on a blindside hit on a nickel blitz

Kevin Toliver started against Washington and I think his entire freshman year as a true freshman but he didn't have nearly the college career as other DBs.

Shaq would probably say he wasn't the best player on the team. He was pretty raw. The best player on that team was sophomore Chris Jackson, who IMO is the greatest true freshman ever at LSU.

It was probably mid 70s when freshmen were allowed to play varsity, so Casanova, Pistol, etc aren't eligible.

Hodson was a redshirt freshmen.

Dalton Hilliard, Faulk and Fournette would top my football lists.

I've only been watching since 2005, but Tyrann Mathieu and Leonard Fournette come to mind pretty easily.
