The spectacular play of Derek Stingley has got me wondering where he places amongst the best true freshman to ever suit up for the purple and gold. I know it is still early in the season but Stingley looks like he has a real shot of being 1st team All SEC (and maybe All American) as a true frosh. I'm a younger fan (25) so I dont know of many players and teams pre-2007. What other true freshman belong in this category?

Dalton Hilliard ran for 901 yards on 193 carries with 11 TDs as a true freshman and was 1st team All SEC.

ETA: Forgot to add he had 31 catches for 368 yards and an additional 5 TDs.

Justin Vincent had a really great season as a freshman.

It's hard to evaluate defensive players in that way though...it's just more subjective.

TM7 for defense
57 tackles (34 solo)
8.5 tfl
4.5 sacks
2 ints
7 pbu
3 fumble recoveries
5 forced fumbles

Gold Standard for TF secondary play.

Mathieu was good as freshman. But dont confuse freshman year with sophmore year, which arguably the best defensive performance for a year for any player ever...

I wouldnt say TM's freshman year is indisputably the best

Faulk ran for 1000 yds while missing a game or 2, including 200+ in the bowl game.

Fournette also had a very good true freshman year, over 1,000 yards rushing and I think (?) had a kickoff return for a TD.

Dalton Hilliard's freshman year was when I was only about 6 years old but it made me an LSU fan because of how happy my dad got when he watched him play.

probably Tommy Casanova, but freshmen couldn't play varsity in the SEC back then

ETA: and you couldn't leave early for the draft

Tommy Hodson was SEC freshman of the year in 1986.

Kevin Faulk/Booger McFarland were Co-SEC freshman of the year in 1995.
