Beginning of The End for True College Amateurism ?

And the NCAA ?
Pay to play is either legal or about to be legal in six states & now US Congressman Anthony Gonzales, Ohio Congressman, announced plans to bring a name, image & likeness bill to DC.
LINK
While the intent of the confessional bill is “to save” college athletics, it will be a fight with CA or other states that draft legislation to stay competitive. Will make recruiting easy; just be the highest bidder.
While I think the kids deserve a share, I just don’t see a way to limit or restrict what they can or cannot be offered.
Glad I won’t be around to see the end to this saga.

It ended a LONG time ago.

It’s about time. Where else can a person be PROHIBITED from making a dime from his/her contributions and image while the institutions are making millions?

There are thousands of details people just don’t see when it comes to this issue. On its face it seems fair but the the Pandora’s box this type of legislation opens up will destroy the sport we all love. All you need to do is look at who is driving this movement to know that it’s a bad idea.

It is currently legal in every state.
Have you ever heard of a kid going to jail because he was paid, in some form, to play college athletics?

We will get more NCAA football games from EASports.
It’s in the game!
It’s in the game!

The NCAA will never allow this, they have too much power. It will be challenged in court and the NCAA will win. Too many negative effects if they were to allow this.

This same argument was used when colleges started recruiting black athletes. It just made the game better and more popular.

Lol what? This isn’t even in the same universe as integration.

EA lost that lawsuit on purpose with the intention of getting here. The average public defender could’ve crushed the players case against EA.

I bet they won’t.
It’s a form of discrimination. All other scholarship students can make money off their likenesses and abilities EXCEPT athletes . Art scholarship students can sell paintings, music scholarship students can get paid for performing in a concert, etc.. Only athletes have this inhibiting rule placed on them.

Yes. EA was actually on the side of the players. They actually wanted to pay the players for their likenesses.

Nothing wrong with making money off of their likeness as long as there are restrictions that eliminate influence. I’m talking about the direction certain groups are pushing this thing.

I never said it was. I just said that people claimed it “would ruin the sport as we know it”.

This! I would get the newest PlayStation to get that game and other college games. I miss ncaa baseball!

The groups that run EA and the companies who work with EA to produce those games are the same ones pushing for players to be paid outright.

Specifically?

That’s a straw man, you said this was the same situation. And you know damn well where this is going, don’t try to play naive on the issues you can’t defend while playing expert on the ones you can.

I don’t think colleges should pay the athletes. College is supposed to be about education, not sports. Sports are extracurricular activities. I just have see issue with a player holding a camp during the summer or being paid for autographs, or being paid by a company like EA Sports.
