Wade has put together a great staff since he's been here, and it's paying dividends.

Greg Heiar
Asst. Coach

First, getting Heiar from Wichita State I'd say was the biggest get. He'd been Marshall's best assistant for 6 seasons when WSU was making noise in the NCAA tournament. He will be a Head Coach one day, I hope we can keep him as long as possible though. He's filled in for Wade on the coach's radio show when he's been out recruiting. Very impressive speaker, just a likable guy. Yes, LSU is big time and better than Wichita St., but they were on a run, when Wade got Heiar to come to BR, that was big time. If you've noticed, in the last 2 years, since he left, you don't hear Wichita State mentioned for anything these days.

Tony Benford

Benford was pretty much responsible for getting many of Marquette's big time players (Jae Crowder-w/ Jazz now) as they reached the Sweet 16 in back to back years for 2011 and 2012. He then went on to North Texas to be the Head Coach when Johnny Jones left to come here.

Bill Armstrong

Came from Ole Miss, Manager of Operations and Assistant Coach. Played for UAB. Was with Andy Kennedy at Ole Miss and helped Ole Miss reach 27 wins in a season, school record, and helped get Ole Miss to the NCAA Tournament and won the SEC Tournament in 2013. Doing anything worth a shite at Ole Miss should be commended.

Nelson Hernandez

Director of Basketball Operations
Does all of the Video, helps with practice schedules, a bunch of crucial important shite nobody thinks of. From Brooklyn.

Greg Goldin

Strength and Conditioning
He's been with Wade everywhere he's been going back to Chattanooga and VCU. You can tell when we've been to Overtime, we aren't worn out.

Alex Wharton
Director of Video Operations

He helps provide scouting videos to help prepare the Tigers and the coaching staff for future opponents. He also sets up video break downs of drills in practice that the team can watch as a team or individually.

And last, but not least...

Tasmin Mitchell

Director of Player Developement

Wade hiring somebody being a young ex-player, somebody that knows LSU inside and out. Was a great player, person and it's no surprise the players like him and respect him. Guy is a true Tiger, let's not forget hecould have gone anywhere... Kentucky, Tubby Smith made trips to Denham Springs to try to get him, but he stayed home.

This is a Damn strong staff.

I'm sure other posters can add to what these guys do with recruiting, etc.

I thought for sure this was a Tiger Ree thread...

But this is fantastic. Great job, and you're right, Wade has surrounded himself with terrific coaches. LSU fans need to realize that we really are building something that is sustainable and program changing

Thanks for posting this. Can you, or someone elaborate on each coaches specific responsibilities for LSU? Do some just focus on Defense and others offense? Is there a shooting coach? Not sure what the assistants do in basketball. Thanks.

That's a good question. LSUsports.net doesn't mention the specifics like that. But I'd like to know that as well.

Sorry, I don’t have the links; but I’ve read in articles before and heard in some of Wade’s interviews that Heiar is the lead on man defense (which LSU primarily runs) and Armstrong is the zone defense guy (1-3-1, which Ole Miss ran a lot when he was asst)

quote:

Is there a shooting coach?

Never heard this said specifically, but Heiar and Armstrong work with the guards, while Wade (seems odd position for him) and Benford work with the front court players. Heiar is known to a be a guru for guard development and is widely credited with turning Van Vleet and Baker into the guards they were at Wichita.

Additionally, Wade has said that each of the assistants are tasked with the scout for each game and are considered the lead assistant for the game they scout.

I’ve also seen others on here talk about the recruiting abilities of all 3 and they are complimentary of one another. Example is that Benford primarily recruits TX, while Heiar has connections to FL and the Juco ranks. If we are able to get Watford to sign this year, it will be b/c of Armstrong’s family connections to Watford.

Finally, no one has mentioned Merritt as another staff member. He is likely the next bench asst when there is an opening. He brings a lot of recruiting connections to AAU circuits, especially in the TX/SW area.

Great thread OP. This staff doesn’t get near enough credit.

That’s Armstrong. He coaches the zone defense.

Heiar is a keeper but it’ll be hard to keep him long term. The guy is just too good especially developing guards.

This is a great thread and extremely informative. Now I want to know more about these guys.

Tiger Ree should take notes and follow your example. He tries to force feed everyone and tries to divide the fan base. I know it’s his job but he shows his true colors too much and is an employee rather than a fan.

You just showed your true appreciation and it comes off as genuine. Thank for this thread.

I cooked for the staff yesterday after game. Armstrong brought along Marshall Henderson who was in town visiting him. Made for great dinner conversation. All the staff are top notch guys looking to make a name for themselves. They all recognize that being a part of this rebirth will look very good on a resume.

I take back my love for Armstrong. Fire him before he brings Christian Laettner in to visit!

Just kidding. I know it’s a connection. I really like this staff.

This is not very specific but is a quote from one of Coach Wade's pressers.

quote:

Wade on coaching assignments:

Scout coach does matchups
One watches offense
One watches defense

Wade: "The game is my time. They're assistants for a reason. They're much more valuable in practice."

Most important thing is scout coach getting assignments right.

LSU has a great staff of assistant coaches. Every one of them is well-qualified.

Greg Heiar, champion. Guy flat out wins. I’m with you in hoping we keep him next year, but I believe he’s going to get that call.
