From #5 in the country early last season to being picked dead last in the SEC this season. Wow

Wow, we have guys on every list. Our depth is absurd, and our players can play. I think we’ll finish top 3. We’re better than Miss St. and Auburn right now IMO, and from talent terms were better than Tennessee too.

Waters is a SEC POY candidate. However, his numbers from last season (particularly scoring) will likely be DOWN by mere virtue of the fact he won't have to be LSU's #1 scoring option.
Tennessee and Auburn should be picked at the top of the league. Both return a lot from very good teams last season. But now they aren't just lying in the weeds (ex. Tenn. was picked 13th to start the season) and it can be difficult when the target is on your back.
The top four teams ALL have coaches with significant skins on the wall. But I don't know if any are as hungry as Wade. He will have LSU ready to play. This is the best roster he's ever coached (both as an Asst. and HC)

And he is being mentioned by some as a possible SEC POY candidate. Lester won't like this at all.

Auburn did lose there best player by transfer. He did a lot for that team too, not just scoring.

Because they return Gafford, I think 13 might be a little low for them, but they are literally replacing the rest of the team basically.
They lose 7 of their Top 9 scorers from last year, Gafford and an undersized PF @ 6'6, 222 Adrio Bailey with no shot, who averaged 4 points in 14 minutes per game last year...are the only returnees in that group.
They also didn't bring in any Top 130 players in their recruiting class and no high profile transfers.

True. But they also get Wiley and Purifoy both back this year; so that is a big boost for them.

True. But they are getting a 5 star, top 25 ranked Center back (Austin Wiley) who had to sit out all of last year. They are also getting back their second-leading scorer from two years ago (after a suspension) who also had to sit out last year.
Even with the loss of Herron, they will likely be a MORE talented team this season. The question is will the style of play lead to better results? Last year Pearl had to play fast with essentially a four guard line up. When they were on, they could blitz people in a hurry (just ask LSU). This season he probably won't play as fast because they have strength in the frontcourt. The question is will that style change help or hurt?
Either way, like him or not, Pearl has been a successful coach everywhere he's been. They may not win the SEC, but it's hard to imagine they won't be a big factor in the race.

quote:slow down sparky. all 3 of those teams are at least one year ahead of lsu in program development. auburn is a tough opponent for anyone. tenn is just darn good. state is going to be legit this year. lsu is one year away from breaking into that echelon, which is no knock on wade. it's just how tough the sec is now. lsu will be a force for sure. i just think it's going to take longer into the season for all those new pieces to settle in whereas those other 3 teams are already rolling.

I know, but looking from a talent standpoint this team is the second best team in the SEC. If by the end of the year they have complete chemistry and gel like Miss St. Auburn, and Tennessee, we will have a real argument of being better than those teams. And after this year we will lose Reid and possibly Waters so this year is a real solid opportunity.
