Baseball Spring Scrimmage #12 2/10/19
Gold slips past White 1-0 in 5 innings.

White
LF DiGiacomo 0-3
DH Mathis 0-3 1K
1st Bianco 0-2
DH Garza 1-3
3rd Reid 0-2
2nd Dugas 0-2
C Willis 0-1 1BB

Pitchers
Gunter 92mph 1IP 1H
Threadgill 90mph 1IP 1H 1BB
George 90mph 1IP 2H 1ER 1wp
Peterson 92mph .2IP 1H

Gold
RF Duplantis 0-3
2nd Broussard 1-3
SS Smith 1-2 2sb
LF Cabrera 1-2 1RBI
CF Watson 0-2
1st Beloso 1-2
3rd Hughes 1-2
C Doughty 0-0 1BB

Pitchers
Walker 85mph 3.2IP 1H
Beck 1.1IP 1BB 1K

Garza's single was a sharp grounder off Walker's right leg. It bounced 15' in the air toward the first base line. I thought that Walker was done for the scrimmage, at least, but the trainer checked him out and he continued to pitch well for two more innings.

Not sure how deep our pen will be with all the health issues, but we may have the best weekend rotation in the country if Walker is back to his old self.

That sounds like command and/or movement was outstanding.

I'm just so happy that we'll have a 4th and maybe even a 5th starter with this staff in Hilliard and Hill come postseason time. It's something we didn't have at all last year or even the year before that with Reynolds having to start game 1 of the CWS final.

I think this was Walker's best outing of the spring. He had his control back to near what it was prior to his injury. He got eleven outs with only the infield single given up to Garza.

As for the bullpen depth; there are 7 veterans ready to go along with 6 strong newcomers to break in this season. AJ Labas is the only pitcher ruled out at this point with Nick Storz and Easton McMurray questionable to return at some time this season. I think the pen will be a strength for us.

I went to college with his father. Great family and glad to see him wearing purple and gold.

Meh... those 7 vets were a part of a pen last season that was a huge weakness for us.

With how good our starters should be, most nights we won't need to eat up more than 2 innings to bridge to Peterson in the 9th. But we're going to need at least two or three new arms to step up to go alongside Hilliard (who needs to stay healthy) and Beck (who is very Jekyll & Hyde).

I'm starting to think our hitters are looking forward to batting against pitchers that don't have "LSU" on their uniform.

Thanks for the scrimmage recap, Scuba.

Fontenot and Peterson were solid. By all accounts, Fontenot is a Louis Coleman clone who simply isn’t needed in a starter role but could if needed. And we don’t even need him at closer. Makes me giddy.

Starters were 5-16 (0.312) just tough to put things together in just 4 innings and pitchers constantly changing.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

And according to Scuba's stats for Saturday's scrimmage the starters were 4 for 14 (.286) with no extra base hits and 0 runs scored.

So in the past two days of scrimmages which approximate a full 9 inning game, the starters have scored 1 run.

I'm predicting we will score more than one run/game on opening weekend when our hitters are not facing our pitchers.

Walker sat around 88 pre injury, correct?

I think this weekends scrimmages were like a dress rehearsal for next weekends opening series, pitching wise. The same starters and pretty much the expected pitchers out of the pen.
The position players are definitely looking forward to facing someone else's pitchers. All three of our starters were very effective this weekend.

According to this Q&A b/w PM and Scott Long he was at 90:

quote:

And in all honesty, we have to see where Walker is. We think he’s going to be ready to compete at a high level, but he hasn’t pitched in games in a while. His velocity is not quite what it was before he got hurt. He was 90 when he was pitching so well. Last night his best fastball was about 86. Is his velocity going to take a tick up? Is his command going to be good? Will he have a bite on his curveball and feel for his changeup? He hasn’t pitched in so long; we just have to be sure he’s ready to compete at a high level. If he’s not, he could potentially move to midweek starts and one of the two freshmen could take over the Sunday role. We just don’t know yet.

Yep. It looks like we're going to be dodging rain on opening night. (I just wanted to get the first "rain delay" post of the season out of the way.)

I'm planning on making it out to the early Friday game between Army and Air Force. Weather permitting there is an Air Force flyover scheduled prior to that game. The head coach of the Air Force team knows people.....

I haven't seen the schedule for the other games for the weekend. I would like to check them out as well.
