the zone defense that OSU was playing and the things it allows you to do defensively.
I thought it was interesting.

I make the point because against NW State LSU came out playing zone and struggled but there might be a method to the madness. The only way to slow Bama will be to mix and match zone with man to man. If LSU plays man only, Bama is going to torch them. I think you see LSU with some more zone this weekend against Utah St. You have to work on it.

Clemson in the NC last year beat Bama because of disguising coverage and zone. Tua couldn’t figure it out. That is exactly why Aranda was experimenting with it early in the year.

Yep.

It was done also by georgia. It works against bama.

You cannot just go out and line up man v man. You have to disguise and execute.

I agree. I think that's part of our struggles on defense. I think Coach O is trying to replicate what Clemson did last year in the national championship game. Who cares if you give up 400 yards between the 20s if you hold them where it matters and score 40+ yourself

not necessarily. That's an assumption, and man has worked against them in the past.

In regards to Bama... yeah, even though I mentioned the assumption above I do believe zone, if executed correctly, gives us a better chance. One thing to look at is Tua operating off reads or pre-determined routes with timing (and a progression in both cases). If he's truly making reads with his progression then they will find soft spots in the zone and we should man up and mess up their timing at LoS.

ETA: It damn sure appears they are operating on pre-determined progressions and timing routes (something Sark has always done). So while it would be great to disrupt that timing, they aren't necessarily looking for zone soft spots. Hence zone is the way to go. By pre-determined progression I am referring to they look at routes in a pre-set progression (most do this). In contrast, what we are doing now is the order of progression is set by pre-snap reads by Burrow. It necessarily leverages defensive alignment.

Aranda has mentioned this many times, but just in pieces. It can be summed up with he wants to play more zone because it gives him more opportunities to disguise things which will result in more turnovers that we now have an offense that will capitalize on. It's a complementary defense that is also more like he has run in the past. Also noting he's mentioned that it needs to be able to get pressure with 4 (but not the same 4 every time).

And you are correct, it's not being executed correctly and part, not all, is on the defensive coaches (with part on players and part on injuries).

Comes down to this if the D changes scheme:

IF Aranda thinks he has the personnel to do it, he will continue to try and implement his zone concepts and do his best to coach them up.

IF Aranda thinks he doesn't have the personnel and he leaped too far too fast he'll dial it back to be more like last year (which, by the way, included a lot of zone also).

Wrong. The only way to best bama is to pressure tua and get him uncomfortable and very little time to make reads and progressions. No matter what coverage you run vs those frickers on defense , if you give the pineapple time and a clean pocket to throw from, somebody in their wr Corp is going to get open. Even if it's not wide open, it doesn't matter vs them, bc he is so accurate and can just pick a defense apart. We have to pressure tua hard and make him uncomfortable throwing the ball, or nothing else will matter and we will be in a shootout, period. I know we are going to be able to score with them bc our offense is simply scary. You can't and won't shut LSUs offense down, all you can try to do is contain it and force field goals and hope we turn the ball over or make stupid penalties that kill drives...I don't care whos defense it is either, our offense is just too prolific and explosive to shut down. LSU hasn't shown me yet that they are capable of putting the kind of pressure on Tua that you will need to do to disrupt that offense. They need Lawrence, Logan and Chaisson back healthy.

I agree with this.
Pressure on Tua makes him struggle a lot. If the zone trips up Bama, I'm glad Aranda is working on it, but pressure will be a very important as well. Tua doesn't handle people around his legs or m l even moderate pressure well.
Couple that with him having to make reads and find the soft spot in zone should create problems for him

Our LBers have shown they can't play zone.

A lot of our busted plays so far have been due to this.

It's allowing the corners to be more aggressive in run support and provides better awareness of quarterback runs as they aren't simply pressing at the line of scrimmage and then running downfield in coverage with their backs to the LOS. I'm loving it. The defense is much more aggressive and they are flying to the ball.

Our defensive line also puts pressure on the QB constantly which obviously helps a ton. There's little to no time back there to make a decision.

Are you simple, or just a troll?

We've probably played zone more than half of our defensive snaps this season...

Pure man coverage against Bama is like to trying to beat them with a power running game. Oh wait....

Bama's bread and butter is short throws to their play makers.
Don't know which is better for that zone or man to man ?

Easier said than done, but getting pressure will be key.

According to SEC Stat Cat, Tua's stats w/ and w/o pressure:

Completion % - 54% vs 85%
Accuracy % - 50% vs 78%

Some interesting trends when he's pressured:

Average Depth of Target - 11.5 yds vs 6.2 yds
PA Pass Percentage - 38% vs 24%

So far this year, it has been easier to get pressure on Tua than it has been on Burrow (pressure on 23.2% of drop backs vs 22.6%). It appears Alabama has been giving up pressure on PA passes this year, and Tua is also trying to pick up more yards, on average, when he's pressured. Hopefully we find a few ways to get home against him come November.

So how long we giving Aranda to have the people he needs to run the defense he wants? I feel like every year since he has been here the on going narrative is.....well this is only part of his defense, next year he will implement the rest when he has the off season to coach them up and the personnel he needs.

I am major advocate for Aranda by the way, just ready for his full blown defense to be implemented and call on any defensive scheme he needs when the situation calls for it. This is his 4th year...would the rant allow Coach O that amount of time to get things implemented? People wanted to shite can him last year after just 2 full seasons as HC.
