Jason Vargas

Position: Pitcher
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 203 lbs.
Class: Freshman
Experience: 1 Letter
City/State: Apple Valley, Calif.
High School: Apple Valley HS

Excellent pitching prospect who should contribute on the mound this season ... selected in the 43rd round of the 2001 major league draft by the Minnesota Twins.

High School: Earned four letters in baseball (pitcher/first baseman) and one letter in football (quarterback) at Apple Valley High ... earned all-state, all-area and all-league honors in baseball during an outstanding career ... posted a 20-10 career pitching record with a 1.50 ERA, 69 walks and 272 strikeouts ... also registered a career batting average of .450 with 12 homers and 78 RBI.

Played here during 2002 as a freshman pitcher and hitter...I always like the kid as he was vdery talented, even at the plate. I remember him as he hit the Intimidator with a bomb during the preseason game current LSU vs Alumin they used to have...I think Smoke sent him packing as he didn't 'fit in' with plans...went to JC then Long Beach State...has been in the majors ever since...made MLB all-star team...pitching tonight against Kuechel and Astros..has second best ERA in the league....couldn't play for Smoke?

Vargas was drafted by Major League Baseball's Minnesota Twins with the 1,273rd pick in the 2001 Major League Baseball draft. Jason declined and decided to go to Louisiana State University. As a freshman at LSU, Vargas went 1-1 with a 3.43 ERA in 13 games. He also saw occasional action as a first baseman and designated hitter, and in his first collegiate at-bat, he launched a pinch hit grand slam to lift the Bayou Bengals to a victory over Mercer. However, Vargas decided to transfer out of LSU after the 2002 season to Cypress College for the 2003 season, picking a junior college so he would still be eligible for the draft. He was the Southern California junior college player of the year for his work on the mound and at the plate. However, as the season wore on, his arm slot dropped; and his velocity fell into the mid-80s. That, combined with Vargas' signing bonus demands, depressed his draft stock, so he went undrafted. Vargas headed to Long Beach State for his junior year. He liked the school's history of producing major league talent and liked the school's hard-nosed mentality even more, especially after getting a recommendation from J.J. Newkirk, who played for Vargas's father, Joe, at Victor Valley High School. Vargas arrived at LBSU with a new work ethic determined to improve upon his year at Cypress College. Vargas also proved a fast learner. At Long Beach, he learned to keep his top half aligned with his lower half over the rubber and not drift toward the plate as he twisted through his delivery. The tweak allowed Vargas to repeat his mechanics and keep his arm higher, which in turn increased the velocity on his fastball and improved the break on his curveball. The new work ethic paid off, and in 2004 Vargas went 7-6 with a 4.14 ERA in 18 games on the mound, while hitting .354 with 14 doubles and five home runs as the team's designated hitter.

Yes
I remember him hitting a homerun at the old Box.

He played one year and I'm guessing he left because of grades (rumor was he never went to class the one year he was here) and was not going to be eligible so he enrolled at JC with intent of going pro but then resurfaced at Long Beach St if I remember right.

I think he signed with Skip...got here then left for home in Apple Valley, CA...his Dad was a painting contractor...put him to work...made a quick return to BR...did really well as a freshman...he was one of those players that you just knew was going to be a MLB player but I thought he would make it as a hitter...he really had some power!

For some odd reason I don't recall many LSU baseball players from about 2001-2005 or so.

No, Vargas got homesick and went back to California to be closer to mommy. True story.
