I've been joking over the last few days about when should we expect the Corey Raymond for DC threads to start popping up.

The question is not "why not", it is "why aren't we securing an elite, top-5 DC?"

I am intrigued by the OC and PGC hires and support the attempt to maintain our 2019 offensive philosophy. It is still a risk, though.

I can't see how simply promoting Raymond would be anything but settling.

He's widely regarding as a top, or even the top, defensive backs coach and recruiter combination in the country.

It's a good thing our coaches are so well-regarded that people try to lure them away every year.

I definitely want to keep Raymond as a position coach, but not promote him to DC.

Do we want to be a championship team again? That doesn't just happen. You need elite players and elite coaches.

We hired intriguing, but not elite (not yet anyway) coaches on offense. I can't think of any major team wanting to hire Raymond as DC (position coach yes, DC no).

If LSU names Raymond as DC, can anyone credibly say we have any elite coordinators?

I think if he were DC material he would already be there wouldn’t he?

People are crazy if they think Raymond should be the dc. No disrespect but the guy has never been a defensive coordinator before and Ed can’t afford to miss again or he’ll be gone.

Because I think at least some of the Raymond threads are to try to garner support from the fanbase to hire Raymond as DC.

If we are to hold O and Woodward to their commitment to hire the best coordinators, we should not support this.

If Freeman doesn't work out, what other elite DCs are out there to hire? Almost all of our recruiting class is in. I expect them not to panic but to do what they need to do to secure an elite DC. If we don't, we'll be back to 8 win seasons and arguing Bama, Clemson, and OSU are better only because the NCAA protects them or some other nonsense.

Eh if we miss on Freeman and maybe one other big target I’m cool with it. There is something to be said for rewarding loyalty. And I would wager that hiring from within has just as good track record in college football as the big outside splash hires probably even better. Continuity is a major positive

In many cases, yes. But we destroyed our continuity last year in hiring Pelini and going with his scheme. We certainly don't want to maintain continuity from anything we saw on the defensive side of the ball last year. I sure hope we aren't keeping any of that scheme.

We need to get an elite DC and let him install his system. Freeman fits that bill. There are others who we could get at the money we're willing to spend. If Freeman doesn't work, don't settle. Make it happen.

Lol I think the continuity Raymond could
provide would stretch a little further back than last year. Unless you think Pelini taught him everything he knows.

They've been popping up since before the season was over.
Where've you been?

I haven't seen them, at least not in the same number as I have now that Freeman didn't immediately accept.

Simply promoting Raymond would be a typical LSU hire. Make a big public play for a hot name, then simply quit the process and promote from within someone with either no experience or negative experience in the position. Then try to convince the fanbase that this is consistent with their stated commitment to hire the best coordinators.

This is not a path to a championship.

Just add the title of passing defense coordinator since that seems to be the new rage with all these position coaches.
