An Oral History of the Derek Ponamsky GIF on Jordy Culotta this morning

Many of you are familiar with this wonderful and hilarious gif of Derek Ponamsky trying to run a 40 (and falling with style):
However, I didn't know the full story behind this gif until I watched today's Culotta show. Now I think the gif is even funnier knowing the backstory from Jordy. The segment about it is during the last 10 minutes of the show. For those of you that can't watch or listen to it yet here are some cliff notes:
- They showed an old pic of Jordy and Derek wearing LSU baseball unis for a ceremonial first pitch for softball. Derek is wearing those stirrups high.
- Rick Reilly apparently made the video of Derek falling go viral. He jokingly blasted Derek for trying to LARP as an athlete.
- The setting for it was a pro day event for LSU football media and they invited media members to try the 40 yard dash. Derek was the first one to go. For his effort he tore a hamstring AND broke his collarbone. Supposedly they canceled the event shortly after the fall.
- A reporter for WAFB interviewed him right after he was in a sling. He limped off the indoor practice field and into the training room to get patched up. Les and Charles Scott were giving him advice on how to recover from a broken collarbone.

Yes. Yes it is.
Did your mom not let you watch Tom & Jerry as a kid?

How long did it take your collar bone to heal? I mean a hammy on a fat arse like you probably took a couple years.

If it’s a convicted felon it’s ok.

Is that guy Lloyd still with the show?

Tom and Jerry aren't real.
But if the only way you can feel better about yourself is to mock someone else, do what you gotta do.

My hamstring took a year. Never had a collar bone break. But can we please just leave this poor guy alone? If you wouldn't trade places with him, then why pick on him...?

JFC it's not like I'm picking on a guy with terminal cancer. It's schadenfreude. He recovered. He moved on. It's fine and thought it was a funny story Jordy shared today. I don't hate the guy.

Hey Derek put himself out there. If he has a pair he should own it. If not stay your arse off the cameras or tug boats.

I don’t know. Why don’t you break your arm and let’s find out.

I wouldn’t say it’s “the only way” but it’s one way. Especially when the person getting hurt is a chode douche bag.

You're taking this a bit too serious. Nobody here would say shite to his face about it so calm your tits. They wouldn't pick on him or bully him IRL. He's a source of comedy because of his on air and public persona attitude. Had he been humble and been revered as more of a kind and nice guy and hurt himself, I am sure he wouldn't be the butt of so many jokes.
BUT....when you create a reputation for being an arse, treating people like they are beneath you, being full of yourself and always acting like the smartest guy in the room and literally fall flat on your face people will mock you for it. It's basically the premises of alot stand up comedy routines. Rarely is someone like Mr Rogers mocked but people like Trump, Kanye, etc are.

Story ruins it for me. I thought he was trying to run too fast and fell like Daniel Jones.
If he pulled a hamstring it’s not funny. If he tried to quickly fall to rest the hamstring then landed on his collarbone it makes me not want to laugh.
