Could not most alley oop dunk plays be called for offensive goaltending? Seems the ball is frequently “ in the cylinder” when jammed

Every so often you'll see it called when the ball is very near the rim

Usually the ball is caught at the edge of the backboard though

I believe there is an exception in the rule book for dunks.

I believe the rule allows for it.

It’s normally thrown to one side of the backboard, the same side the receiving player is jumping from

It’s almost never in the cylinder when they catch it. Extremely rare.

I am willing to bet this will be one of those points of emphasis the refs will be looking for going into next season because Cal complained.

If you read the rules you will see the answer is nope.

quote:

Section 15. Basket Interference and Goaltending

Art. 2. Basket interference

a. Basket interference occurs when a player:

1. Touches the ball or any part of the basket while the ball is on or within
the basket;

2. Touches the ball while any part of it is within the cylinder that has the ring as its lower base;

3. Reaches through the basket from below and touches the ball before it enters the cylinder;

4. Pulls down a movable ring so that it contacts the ball before the ring returns to its original position, and

5. Causes the basket or backboard to vibrate when the ball is on or within the basket or the backboard and/or is on or in the cylinder.

b. The cylinder is the imaginary geometric figure that has the ring as its base and is formed by the upward extension of that ring.

c. The ball shall be considered to be within the basket when any part of the ball is below the cylinder and the level of the ring.

d. A player may have a hand legally in contact with the ball, when this contact continues after the ball enters the cylinder or when, during such action, the player touches or grabs the basket

Art. 3. Goaltending.

a. Goaltending occurs was long as it has a possibility of entering the basket.hen a defensive player touches the ball during a field-goal try and each of the following conditions is met: (Exceptions: Rule 10-4.1.h)

1. The ball is on its downward flight; and
2. The ball is above the level of the ring and has the possibility, while in flight, of entering the basket and is not touching the cylinder.

b. It is goaltending to touch the ball outside the cylinder during a free throw, regardless of whether the free throw is on its upward or downward flight.

c. When the ball contacts the backboard and any part of the ball is above the rim during a field goal attempt, it is considered to be on its downward flight. In such a case, it is goaltending when the ball is touched by a player as long as it has a possibility of entering the basket.

And when it does occur, the penalty should be called.

Offensive GT is a stupid rule. How can you interfere with your own attack on the goal?

Defensive GT makes sense.

I think offensive GT is technically basket interference. People just use "goal tending" generically to describe both

I think the only reason offensive goaltending even exists is to be “fair” to the defense.

Everyone knows defensive goal tending is bad... offensive is a little more gray, but if you don’t let the defense you can’t let the offense.

The rule and spirit of the rule started on defense, not offense. I’d imagine most people, probably some refs too, don’t care too much about offensive goal tending as long as its not blatant.

I understand the fairness angle, but a part of me kind of agrees with you... the goal is to score and put the ball through the hoop. Kinda silly to penalize the offense for doing that.

If the ball is touched first outside the cylinder and then brought into it (aka a dunk), it's not basket interference

You can watch the next 300 ally oops and maybe 1 or 2 would be close. You can always spot the bandwagon newcomers.

It's actually the opposite, you rarely see the ball placed right over the rim on alley oops.
