All Kidding Aside, LSU's Quarterback Reputation Is Worse Than The Actual Results

“Now the thing about playing quarterback at LSU, it goes for a lot of positions at a lot of spots throughout the Southeast, they haven’t exactly been lacking talent there. There’s plenty of guys at LSU over the years that could flat out throw it. How many guys have they recruited at that position that have been five-star guys that they just couldn’t put it together week in and week out, or they would get a little rattled or they’d make bad decisions? It hasn’t been for a lack of talent, so I guess the question that I would have if Joe Burrow were the guy is can he handle playing quarterback at LSU mentally, because that’s been the biggest hurdle.”

If you look at the history of our QBs and the results of bad recruiting and/or being plain unlucky, the reputation isn’t really warranted as much as outsiders make it.
The start and fall was with Perrilloux setting us back. Followed by Zack Lee opting for the MLB, Russell Sheppard not living up to the hype, Hayden Rettig or Gunner Kiel situations. Brandon Harris not playing as expected.
LSU has had great QBs that we’re very successful. Jones, Hodson, Booty, Tyler, Davey, Mauck, Russell, Flynn, Mettenberger.
We’ve had some misfortunes and ended up trying to catch up and fill in at times. It’s not like we haven’t recruited highly rated QBs and had commits.
I really thought we were going to turn it around with Lowell and Brennan. Still might, and could add Burrow as well.
ETA: I should add Zach Von Rosenberg, another highly rated Qb that committed and went MLB.
And Jordan Jefferson, 4* Dual threat guy that just didn’t develop.
Jarrett Lee was a 4*, that ended up being average.
Sometimes I wonder, did we have a QB problem or a coaching issue? Because Flynn and Mettenberger did great under Miles.
Maybe we’ve just been unlucky. Either way I like our 3 QBs, and Burrow would be a huge addition.

Calm down, it's just a Forbes article.
Actually a pretty good read.

We've been missing a guy who has ALL the necessary ingredients to be a talented QUARTERBACK : a strong ENOUGH arm, accuracy, and great decision-making, CONSISTENTLY. If a guy is not consistent, then he is not a talented QUARTERBACK in my book. Jamarcus had incredible arm talent, but he was often inaccurate thus inconsistent. The Raiders apparently felt it was a 33 Million Dollar arm. Damn sure wasn't a QB worth 33!

We didn’t lose in ‘13 due to Mett...
We lost because of Chavis.

I have to disagree with part of that.
Jamarcus was one of the best QBs in the history of this program.
Maybe just a bad example to make your point, which I agree with.

I absolutely loved watching Jamarcus and that cannon. I even had a jersey with his name and number. But he was pretty up and down quarterbacking our offense, had a lot of awesome moments, no doubt, but I remember him making some big arse mistakes too.

We never lost to Bama because of Mettenberger.

Flynn was very good for us in 2007. I've always felt it was Bo Pelini that cost us those 2 overtime losses, going into that soft zone D late against kentucky and did the same stupid thing again vs Arkansas. Flynn was great. Crowten's plays were great. Flynn was a 12 & 0 QB.

I agree, he had his moments.
I remember one clearly against Tennessee in Tiger Stadium, right before the first half he scrambled out the pocket near the sideline and instead of throwing the ball away or even running out of bounds, he stands there waiting for a WR to get open and takes a sack. Taking away a FG opportunity. We lose by 3pts. I was so mad with him for so long because of that one play.

Cowton was great for a while. Unfortunately he had a history of being great and then falling off a cliff. We witness that first hand.
And I agree we should of never been in OT with Arkansas and Kentucky. The offense did a good job staying in those games and even coming back, I believe against Kentucky, but I might be wrong. My memory is not perfect

So not only have the writers exaggerated regarding bad qb play at LSU, I've exaggerated a lot too. I reckon I've just been pretty pissy about it the last 4 years and made exaggerated statements as a result. Hell, even my 65-year old dad has been extra bitchy about it. I heard that ole bastard say just last year or so that LSU has never had a GREAT QB in his lifetime. I said aww come on, Burt Jones, Tommy,.. He didn't wanna hear it.

Yessir, I believe Crowten had some mental issues, something a bit off up in that membrane. A good playcaller has got to be EMOTIONALLY intelligent as well.

Didn’t read that but we have had 1 good QB going back to 2008. The rest were basically crap

Yea it’s been a rough road since that one day, in that one month back in 2012. I don’t recall the exact day.
But even when I get over my frustration, I know the truth about our QB situation. I follow recruiting the most. I didn’t really spend much time anywhere else.
I know we’ve been unlucky, and had misfortunes, or even bad evaluations and/or a coaching issue with developing QBs.
But one thing I know is that we’ve had great QBs at LSU.
Hell I’ve seen two national championships in my lifetime and no one can tell me those two guys weren’t solid QBs. They did what they had to do and led LSU.
Along with them, Hodson, Jones and even Mettenberger set records at LSU.

So Mettenberger didn’t set records at LSU? C’mon, he was good whether you want to admit it or not.
