The first statement is true. He has leverage this season, and has zero leverage next season. He is probably trying to find a number that works for him and for the Cubs organization at this point.

I realized that after posting. While it's not a big difference in leverage ,a junior at least has the option to return while a senior has none.

Do guys go play independent or say they will re enter the draft next year?

would be pretty stupid to do it, as it is, Tigers that I know that played pro baseball mostly considered every level of minor league ball, except maybe AAA, a step down from conditions at LSU, plus independent guys don't really get paid anything, they're more partially subsidized

he doesn't have the leverage of a draft eligible or redshirt sophomore, but he has plenty of leverage as a 1st round pick because the Cubs would lose that slot money this year if they are

Yeah born sides have leverage and that's why they negotiate.

Teams have a lot of money to play with and with Lange it wouldnt normally make sense to pay him less than slot... unless you argue successfully that it's unlikely Lange can return next year and beat this year's slot when he loses all leverage. If that's case, Cubs can convince him to lower his number even below slot. Maybe it doesn't make sense for Cubs to pay above slot if they need the excess (over slot) money to sign other players they covet. In that case, they could hold strong that slot is most they'll offer, to which Lange would obviously be pissed off thinking he should be paid more considering his eligibility.

Im sure its 99% chance he's going to sign, but there have been circumstances of a guy coming back for his senior year and faring better. Look at Mark Appel for example.

Projected #1 overall, wanted 6 million in 2012, teams passed on him, he went #8, he doesn't sign and returns to school

Next season goes #1 overall gets over 6 million, and it was the same team drafting #1 overall both years

Then he proceeded to be a huge bust

sure, there are always exceptions, but that's not the norm

that isn't uncommon though baw needs to take that money while he's got some leverage

If all that's true (that 2012 offer was $6M bonus) then he didn't do himself any favors returning and risky everything (injuru, poor performance, etc). In end, he only made $350K more for that risk. Not worth it.

Knowing the Astros, he was likely being offered less than that in 2012

They signed Correa for 4.8 that year, i think they were planning on going under slot

IIRC, JD Drew did just that.

Here are the numbers for the signees. Eye opening comparing senior versus non senior bonuses (especially from 4th round to later) Seems to me they should fix this system.

By watching Cubs pitching today, they better sign Lange quick.

if you don't sign a top 10 round pick, you lose that slot value in your total pool of money that can be used for signing bonuses.

Didn't we get a drafted HS player from the Astro's(?) losing money that way? Was that Lange?
