First, go baseball team !

I picked up the Athlon mag last night, and I do not recall such a list for LSU in terms of position/unit rankings in any previous year.

RB: #1
Off Line: #2
Def Line: #1
DB: #2 (do they really think Texas has a better unit?)

The other 3 units were not ranked, but our QB, WR and LB corps should all be good also. I personally project Jarvis Landry to be a big story for the 2012 offense, and have good confidence in Mr Mettenberger.LB is a question mark, but The Chief will have them ready.

Oh boy, 2012 is gonna be fun to watch!

Texas was pretty impressive last year, and they have a much better LB group than us

Good point. The 1-page breakdown does not include special teams as a unit, but one would assume that Wing-Alleman-Hairston + Matheiu-ODBJr would be ranked near the top or at the top also.

A first time starter who was banged up all year?

LSU's depth is huge: 4 guys who would start in a lot of programs.

I haven't picked one up yet, where is Bama ranked on there?

I remember last year I believe we had the number 1 LB, number 1 DB, number 1 OL, and a top 5 RB.

No one doubts LSU has the best PROVEN RB corps, so for now, you have the best group. After the season it will probably be a whole different story.

After the season we won't have the best proven rb corp?

Oh, and regarding Athlon, save your $ next time and get Phil Steele. Lindy's SEC at a minimum.

I don't see your guys having more yards and TDs than our guys in terms of rushing and REC combined.

Don't blame you for asserting this based on team bias/alliance, but what needs to be factored in is the quality of opponent-faced and other factors compared to 2011 (if that is your basis for asserting Bama has a better chance at out producing the LSU running game).

Start with 2011 and adjust were needed:
1) LSU 2011 schedule was universally-agreed as being more difficult than Bama's. 2012 is MUCH more comparable.
2) TR was the best back in the country in 2011 - gone.
3) Kenny Hilliard played only a small portion of the 2011 campaign.
4) LSU's 2012 offensive line is unquestionable better than 2011.
5) Bama's Oline will be possibly as good in 2012, but no one is saying it will be better than 2011.
6) Lacy is a very good back, but he is NO way close to TR.
7)LSU's running back depth and talent level is sick on steroids.
8) LSU's passing game is projected/predicted, or if you choose "intelligently asserted" to be vastly improved in 2012. This could be argued on the surface to be a negative for the running game due to more passing than running. On the other hand, Les Miles is Les Miles and like Saban will be run-first all day long, meaning the passing will be more likely to open up the running lanes as opposed to closing then since 8 and 9 man boxes will be a rare thing on 1st and 2nd downs compared to 2011. Not to mention that a passing game will allow LSU to get up on teams (more likely) and when that happens, it will be run, run, run by Les Miles

8 is enough to make the point.

You gumps are fascinated by lsu. When we beat you in tiger stadium this year, miles will have beaten king saban 3 years in a row and have a winning record against him

You're probably right. After the season, it may be a whole different story. As in, our backfield will create even greater distance between itself and anyone else. As great as it was last year, they have one more year of experience this season, a tremendous offensive line returning and a QB who presents a more lethal vertical passing threat, which will only open things up further for the running game.

Last season, our top four returning backs combined for 444 carries, 2,338 yards and 30 TDs. And that is considering all the drives we had with a short field due to a tremendous defense that created turnovers.

Oh, and this year, we work Jeremy Hill into the rotation. Plus, Kenny Hilliard only got going about halfway through last season. We've only just begun to tap his potential. Each of our top five backs could start for many teams across college football.

Long story short, I'll put our backfield against anyone's, now or end of season.

Everyone is saying that. It returns four starters, all of whom will only get better, our Center is better and we have a true LT. Our O-Line is better than yours. (slightly)
