9 years ago today, tDecline began.

Miles is now 3-18 at Kansas and still in the Stone Age.

Be thankful we aren’t Kansas.

1/9 should have been the first step in back to back titles and stemming Saban from what he has done.

Everything I’ve read about the lead up to that game indicates an active, albeit lazy decision made by Les Miles to not mix anything up in the offense and stick to the stagnant game plans that had worked out all year thanks to defense and special teams play (read: Honey Badger). He had plenty of time to have mixed in new plays or some creative ideas, but rested on his laurels instead.

This is a core character flaw and one that separates average / above-average people from outstanding / legendary folks. A lot of times it’s missing those small windows of opportunity that makes the difference. My guess is Les preferred to enjoy the moments leading up to the game instead of preparing. Really is sad when you think about it.

My memory is foggy, but I think Erin Andrews(?) interviewed Russel Sheppard(?) on the bus ride over to New Orleans, and he basically said that they didn’t watch any film from the first game because they didn’t need to.

I will never forgive Les for not trying something different...

think about the wideouts he had on the sideline...

put Mett in the shotgun with 4 wideouts, what in the world did he have to lose???

Mett? How about give Jarrett Lee a few snaps? How about just throw the ball downfield?

Yep. No risk, no reward. Les had no problem turning the ball over to the other team by way of a punt, but he’d rather lose a game than throw an interception and win. He was the same way with fumbles - loved to irrationally punish running backs who dared to drop a ball.

If Odell doesn't drop that touchdown pass, maybe we have a competitive game.
LSU finally crosses the 50 and gets a little momentum and come away with 0. The team completely gave up after that drive.

Maybe (probably?), but at the end of the day, wasn't it about QB development? Maybe a properly developed Jefferson or Lee would have been the better choice in 2011. What might have been is the real tragedy.

Alabama was a better complete team than LSU in 2011.

The big upset was beating them on their home field 11/5.

That should be considered the most amazing regular season win in program history, but it was practically erased because of the sham Rematch where ESPN and the voters decided their opinions were more important than results (and that they hoped that a rematch would deliver them the playoff they’ve always wanted that has now utterly destroyed CFB as we knew it).

That LSU team was never going to beat that Alabama team twice in a season, and honestly it was shocking that the amazing defense gave a Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson offense a chance to win even once.

Les's style required an overwhelming superiority of talent. You can beat 95% of your opponents that way but it will always struggle against teams with a parity in talent. It is doomed to failure against teams with better talent (Alabama).

The strange thing is that at a few points in the season the offense was turned loose under Lee (e.g., West Virginia). But when we needed it most, he turtled up and went conservative.
