5 things to get excited about 5 Question Marks and Possible Answers: LSU Football
Posted by SammyTiger on 2/11/18 at 3:35 pm741
5 Things to Get Excited About
1. Greedy Williams -I haven't been this excited about a Cornerback since TM7. Last year he was both lockdown, and a ball hawk. His 6 Interceptions were the most since Mo Claiborne had 6 in 2011. And that was without as an elite pass rush forcing bad throws. When you look at individual Tigers playing their position well it is hard to find anyone playing their position better than Greedy is playing CB, Except maybe...
2. Devin White -The lynchpin of the LSU defense, Devin White had become a tackling machine. HIs 133 tackles are the most since Brady James set the LSU record in 2002., and are good for 4th all time. Throw in 4.5 Sacks and 14 tackles for a loss. You have an incredible season for the second year LB. All of his interviews are Gold. He is the kind of player you want to succeed because he cares and puts 100% in.
3. The Starting DL -Rashard Lawrence was probably the most important players to the success of our defense last year. LSU was 1-2 in games he missed. This year we are putting next to him uber talented Texas Tech Transfer Fehoko, and either Shelvin or Ed Alexander at NT. For the first time since coming to LSU, Aranda will have a legit NT, surrounded by 2 extremely talented DT. Should provide a damn good push.
4. Jonathan Giles - Another Talented transfer from Texas Tech, Giles already has a 1000 + Yard 10+ TD season under his belt. Was a finalist for the Biletnikoff award. Should provide an immediate Boost the an LSU Wr core that is lacking in experience.
5. The Offensive Line -I know it may sound strange, but I believe the OL takes a huge step forward this year despite losing Clapp, Weatherby and Malone. While, Charles initially started at LT out of necessity, it wasn't long before he had supplanted Malone at LT, and honestly, improved the position. Also in consideration for the OT spots are Traore (#2 JUCO OT) and Magee who filled in for Weatherby in the Auburn game, and played extremely well (PFF highest rated OL in the game). Brums and Ingram both return, and the addition of Cregg as OL coach could greatly improve this unit.
5 Questions marks (and Possible Answers)
1. Who is CB2? - In a weird twist of fate, DBU is crazy shallow at CB depth this year. with 4 currently on the roster.
Possible Answer: I think ultimately Fulton plays, and plays well. Vincent is first man in at Nickle, and Kirklin fights it out with Incoming freshman Kelvin Joseph who may fill in at CB if numbers get tight.
2. Who takes over at RB? - We lost Guice and Williams. We only return a career total of 56 carries between CEH, Brosette and Lanard Fournette. For the first time since possibly 2009 we don't have a clear bell cow.
Possible Answers: I am going to be bold and predict Curry is RB1 and getting a bulk of caries by seasons end. I really like this kid, but we could end up going RB by committe for the most of the season
3. Where does the Pass Rush Come From- LSU lost Elite Pass Rusher Arden Key last year (who was never 100%). They also lost our top three players in sacks. I have said before that our DLine should be beastly, so I imagine we will produce a decent amount of sacks from them but there is clearly an opening for and edge rusher.
Possible Answers: Moore or Chaisson, but I think Chaisson will edge him out. Watching him last year, you could tell there was a lot of hesitation on his part. Coming in as a freshmen he started without ever going through a spring camp. With an offseason to become more comfortable with the mental aspects of the game, I expect him to just let it rip next year and be a complete terror.
4. What the frick will the offense look like?- Ensminger hasn't put together a playbook since before Myles Brennan was born. He has come out saying that we will go 3 wide more, and expect to run a RPOs (the hot in the streets new offenseive play). It still isn't clear what exaclty his offense will looke, having brought in veteran NFL WR coach as "passing game coordinator" and Doug Nussmeier as Offensive Analyst things still aren't as clear.
Possible Answer: I fully expect the offense to look almost exactly like it did once Ensminger took over in 2016. Ensminger is prostyle guy, So is Sullivan, and Nussmeier.
I do think we'll add RPOs (even the NFL realizes that they work pretty well). I am hoping having more of a live arm in Brennan (who will obviously be our QB) will open up some passes over the middle, but I still expect a lot of out offense to rely on making deep passes.
5. Are we finally going to get something out of the passing game? - Danny Etling is gone. Maybe he was good, maybe he was great, maybe he sucked, but he is no longer our starting QB. LSU hasn't has someone pass for over 2500 yards since Mettenburger in 2013. the QB situation has crushed Les Miles, and is more or less what will define the success of Ensminger's first year.
Possible Answers: I would say if we do get something out of the offense next year it will be because Brennan lives up to billing and Ensminger lets him sling it. Myles Brennan has a big arm, and has looked decent in spot duty last year. He drove us down the field multiple times vs Troy. We can't be afraid of ints like we have been. Etling has half as many Ints as baker Mayfield, and less than half as many TDs. back in the 90s Engminger had a reputation for letting it rip, and we don't have a feature back (yet, I am still on the Curry Train) that dictates we run it. We could see our QB at least have the oppertunirty to have some real production.

Devin White and Greedy Williams both have "it".

Solid points, baw. This post may break tRant though, way too much logic for both sides of the aisle to handle.

I honestly am excited to see what the offense will look like since we don’t have a big name back to rely on.
Top 3 things to look forward to for me:
1. Fresh new look offense (by new look I mean new players), most excited to see Brennan and Giles. Also really really high on CEH
2. Greedy and Devin White, also I know that Delpit is going to have a breakout season and become a Jamal Adams type player.
3. No joke the new kicker. Dude is going to be the best we’ve had since Colt David.

Wrong board...you can’t write that much without bashing Coach O or Alleva...what is wrong with you?
Good post...
I too wonder about the offense because in 2016 Ensminger could only make limited adjustments mid season...I like the Pro style if we have a decent QB...

Definitely
Our MO has usaully been Have a Shitty QB. Realize it early in the season. Run the frick out of the ball and play defense. Bet the under.
I don't see us having the running game this year to rely on it 100%

even with our last two great RB's, we struggled to make 3rd and short yardage a lot. also, we struggled in the red zone. I honestly think we will be better in those situations because the defense will not be able to predict what we're going to do. also, if Ensminger has the balls to throw the ball on 3rd and short or 4th and goal we could be much better and that would open up the run later on. when Canada threw to the TE close to the goal line, he was always wide open.
imo, this years team will be better than last year. of course, we have a tougher schedule. having auburn on the road and adding Georgia while florida and the aggies being improved will make for a tough schedule.

Guice was a great RB, but I think he lacked mass to be very good in short yardage situations. Fournette was elite in short yardage situations.
I think Florida is still a year away. Mullen is a great coach, but they don't have a QB on their roster to run his offense.

I am an anti-O poster, who is also a hopeless optimist.
I am going to talk myself into this team before the opening kickoff, because i do it every year.

This is my favorite tRant thread topic of the last month, easily. It's too easy to fall into rhe doom and gloom (because the doom and gloom is real, though probably embellished), and it's nice to really look at things objectively.

Nice Post! Hope everything falls into place for the offense. I think the defense is stacked. We will see pretty soon.

I personally believe a lot of our problems in 2017 were due to the friction on the coaching staff, which had as much to do with parting ways with Canada as the lack of improvement of the offense. As much as we think having an NFL stud at rb is imperative for our offense, our best teams didn’t feature a sure fire first round rb. Forcing our offense to be more balanced with the personnel we have might actually be just what this program needs. I’m cautiously optimistic for the 2018 Tigers, mainly because I believe our defense will finish in the top 2 in the league.

You are not very knowledgable about corners, then. We had a great one in 2017.

Great post !!! I wish more post were about the team and less about bashing.
I believe Myles is the real deal. And the offense will be tailored to his talents. We will probably have packages for whichever QB ends up as the back up. Much like Tebow did for Florida.
3 yards and a cloud of dust will be a thing of the past. For those who wanted an offensive change you got your wish. Even though I grew up in south Louisiana I have lived up north long enough to remember Ensminger as oc at Louisiana Tech.....and man oh man did he believe in slinging the ball.
Dont know how successful we will be at it but it is sure to be different !!

The biggest question mark is the offense. I’m reallyyy interested to see what kind of system we run.
O and Ens suggested a high pass ratio.

People are frustrated. We have no idea what to expect on offense so we can’t even really discuss it. I really Enjoyed getting to learn more about Aranda and Canada’s schemes the last couple of offeseasons, but we can’t really do it this year.
The coaching has overshadowed the players for too long. I am Guilty of bitching myself, so I wanted a change of pace.
