quote:

Due to the cancellation of the 2020 season, returning players listed as So., Jr., Jr.-RS or Sr. will have the possibility to exercise an extra year of eligibility in their careers.

No. 8 Matthew Beck and No. 32 Aaron George were seniors in 2020 who have graduated (Gr.), and they are exercising the option for the extra year in 2021 at LSU.

The only players who are not eligible to obtain the extra year are the incoming junior college transfers (Jr.-JC) and the incoming freshmen (Fr.).

I figured this would be happening soon. Now I get to compare the posted roster to what I've put together. My work day just livened up a bit.

ETA: Jaden Hill with #0 is fricking cool.

Everything I had looks like it matches the roster. But I thought the incoming JUCO guys would be considered in the same class they played in last season. It looks like that isn't the case.

A lot of the draft eligible soph and jr are likely going pro if it goes back to a longer draft - it may only be 25 rounds next draft.

I wonder if it will go back to a 35 man roster for 22 season?

I'm thinking it might go to a multi-year phased down approach. Maybe 38 next year and 35 the year after.

I don't think they can realistically do no cap back down to 35 in one year. They won't be able to get through enough of the roster log jam in one year. Especially with a lot less guys turning pro in general.

Who are the big losses from last year? Position players and pitchers. Guessing Henry and Cabrerra.

Glad to see Matt Beck back for his 8th season.

Also interesting to see LSU picked up a Canadian player Theo Millas.

Paul Mainieri said LSU baseball has a COVID-19 policy manual similar to MLB. It mandates no high-fives or spitting.

Paul Mainieri said Jaden Hill will slide into the weekend rotation, likely as the Friday night starter. That's been the plan since last season.

Paul Mainieri: "I think our pitching staff has the chance to be one of the best we’ve ever had." LSU lost one pitcher from an elite staff last season, Cole Henry, while adding a lot of freshmen.

Paul Mainieri on losing so much of the 2020 season: "There's a lot of people in our country and this world that have died from this disease. We're still battling this thing. To sit back and complain and whine seemed very small-minded of me."

Brody Drost will be an interesting player to watch, Paul Mainieri said. He's one of the better hitters in the freshman class, but he can also pitch left-handed out of the bullpen.

As of now, LSU's full baseball schedule remains intact, pending board approval. No one has canceled yet, Paul Mainieri said, but there's a long way to go. Opening weekend includes Notre Dame, Army and Air Force.

Paul Mainieri said six LSU baseball players tested positive for coronavirus at some point over the last few months. Most of them were asymptomatic. All the players tested last week returned negative, he said.

Catcher Hayden Travinski injured his knee this summer, Paul Mainieri said. He may not participate in fall practice.

Paul Mainieri on freshman outfielder Dylan Crews: "You're talking about a kid that's got pretty special qualities... He looks like a big leaguer out there."

I haven't really paid attention to this, but how has the no-spit mandate gone for the MLB. Seems like that would be a really tough subconscious habit for people to break.

I like when we host things like this. Hopefully it works out.

I thought Bianco was transferring? The extra roster spots let him stay?

He put himself in the portal, and at the time Mainieri even said he probably wasn't going to transfer. Then he took himself out of the portal a few weeks later.

I always see Dusty Baker pulling down his mask and spitting. I don’t think they’re too strict with the mandate, probably just aren’t allowing seeds and tobacco this season, or something like that.
