Aranda factor: Great coordinator, but teams did have a lot of time to figure out his tendencies. I'm guessing a new scheme, fresh ideas, new energy might actually benefit us.
Scoring: If our offense is less efficient, which is likely, just because 2019 is almost impossible to top. That will mean less shoot outs, less posessions for the other team, less prevent defense, equals less yards and scoring. It doesn't mean the defense is better, but the stats will look that way.
DL: Shelvin, Logan and Ferrell coming back are certainly bonuses. With the lineman we have, I could see a 4-3 as a better fit. Ika is going to be better than Shelvin, he is more disrupting. I can see Roy, Guillory,, Taylor and Gaye all possibly contributing as Freshmen. Veterans coming back, a more experience Ika, new talent coming in and maybe someone like Cherry or Thomas taking that next step.
LB: We lost a lot here but I am big fan of Clarke. I think he will actually be an upgrade. He is big, fast, athletic and more importantly very smart. Stevens could see more time at outside LB. Brooks will have another year to develop. I see him as a better Debo Jones. We also have a lot of young players that could emerge there.
DB: Losing Delpit was the biggest blow, but he did not play up to standards last year. I don't know if he was dealing with an injury or trying to prevent one but he was not the dominant force he should have been. Getting Harris back and another year of experience for Hampton is good. Ward, Flott, Jones and even Stingley will all improve in their second year. Getting Vincent back can only help. Ricks or McGlothen could contribute as true freshman.
The right coaching hire is going to be very important but the talent is there to be even better next year.

My only concerns:
DL: develop some quality depth with the young'uns. Our starters will be solid.
LB: Queen was such a beast. Biggest question mark is ILB.
DB: not really any worries with Rick's coming in and our options at safety.

If Sampah turns out to be the real deal then we might be okay at LB. But that position will still be the weak link of the defense next year

You say “even better” as if the D was lights out this season. It definitely improved in the last 5 games, but was pretty hard to watch before that point.

You make a good point. It is not like we had the top defense in the land. With the right hire, we just might in 2020.
The biggest concern seems to be at ILB. Clark is the most cerebral LB on the roster. He was 6th in tackles in spite of only starting 3 games. If we switch to a 4-3 we will only need one ILB. Baskerville, Sampah, Starks and White all have talent. We should be just fine.

How'd that work with Kevin Steele?

I Sampah needs one more year from the knee before he shines. I think Josh White will be more of a factor this upcoming season both being important the following year!

Ika is not better than Shelvin and he’s damn sure not more disruptive. Shelvin is a prototypical NT that can rush the passer like an agile 3 tech. Ika is still a damn fine football player but he’s not on Shelvin’s level yet.

What am I missing with you 2 posts which included a ton about LBers. Oh yeah, you didn't mention the highest rated LBer that LSU signed...Phillip Webb! And if you ever watched his video, he proves why! As far as whether the defense will be better than last year, it depends on the LBers. The secondary should be better with some fantastic signees to go with returning Stingley, Vincent, Ward, Stevens if he stays at S, etc. And the only guy that LSU lost on the DL was Lawrence. Everyone else is back along with hopefully Justin Thomas not to mention the news guys of Roy, Guillory, and hopefully M Jackson. Once again, what was the highest rated unit that LSU just signed...LBers. They are FR of course but they have loads of talent.

It will take a top flight DC to field a great defense with the loss of all the LBs

I feel great about the secondary and pretty good about the DL as well.

The juniors that could have declared but chose not to will be the glue of the defense. Vincent, Stephens, Shelvin, Logan will all be called upon to be leaders. Then of course we have Stingley locking down half of the field.

We’re losing Delpit and Fulton. Everybody seems to forget about him, but the reason Stingley had so many picks and pbus is because nobody went after Fulton.

And Fehoko.

And none of them will be able to come close to replacing Chiasson, Queen, and Phillips as true freshmen.

I do think the DL will be improved, despite losing the 2 SRs who played a ton of football. But they are going to have to be dominant to make up for what we’re losing behind them.

Damone Clark was right there with Queen and Philips so no drop off there. Baskerville was step for step in competition with Clark for that backup spot early in the season. Those two have ILB covered. Brooks should pick up right where Chaisson left off at OLB. Divinity was out for most the season and it go handled. Thornton or Anthony can take over there when we put 4 LBs on the field, which really wasn't that often.
Plus 4 big time freshmen LB's coming in. We will OK at LB.
The secondary and Dline will be much better than it was most of the 2019 season.

At one time I dreaded losing Aranda. By halfway through the 2019 season, not so much anymore. He will be replaced by someone at least as good.

Being ok vs being elite is a big difference

We were elite at LB this season

There are a lot of ifs before we can make this claim

Relying on true freshman at this level is a risky proposition.

I'm comfortable with Clark at one ILB and I guess Jacoby at 1 OLB. The other two are big questions as well as great opportunities for someone.

They will at a minimum be good with a shot at being as elite at LB next season. Overall the defense will be more elite than it was in 2019.
