Who’d win if the 2011 squad played the 2019 squad?
I lean towards the 2011 team bc of strong defense and ball control via the run. However, I’ve learned not to bet against Joey Pigskin. Very interesting matchups as well.

Better question would be 2011 team coached by Orgeron vs 2019 team coached by Orgeron. 2011 team wins in that case, while Miles' stubbornness would have him lose to 2019 LSU in the other scenario.

2011 defense was unreal but nobody can stop this offense. Sorry.
2019 34
2011 23

2011 not enough offense and the strength of 19 defense is stopping the run other than Plumlee lol.

If coaching staffs are swapped then it’s a no brainer.

2011 with Joe Brady would've been the best team in the history of college football. Jarrett Lee would've been pretty good running a slightly more conservative version of this offense.

I'll have to think about it. But with 4 legitimate weapons in the passing game and a RB that catches passes out of the backfield.... I think 2019 scores enough to win.

We saw what happened in the game that isn't mentioned when a Qb could throw dimes to a good TE. I think that is only magnified in a 11 vs 19 situation.
In addition, the 11 passing scheme was very basic. You could pull Delpit into a more SS role and not have to worry about JJ or JL going over the top. Not sure 11 could make enough plays in special teams or on offense to beat 19.

Yep, 2011 is already the best team in CFB history. No team will ever accomplish what it did.

Without Miles it would be the best team in college history in any sport, ever!

This thread was done this morning

My post from that one:

But it never faced a QB with an 80% completion rate.

Well yeah, because no QB has ever done what Burrow is doing. Burrow is historic, as was Tyrann Mathieu. This offense surely hasn’t faced a game changing difference maker like him, also because there has never been one like him before or since.

But 2011 did face, and shut down, several very good QBs.

Darron Thomas, Geno Smith, who was outstanding in 2011 and 2012, Tyler Wilson, Aaron Murray, and AJ McCarron x2.

All were held drastically below their average numbers for the year except for McCarron in the Rematch.

quote:

That defense never saw an offense that got rid of the ball this fast and went 4 or 5 wide and ran tempo not allowing for substitution.

This offense hasn’t seen a defense that attacked the QB or took the ball away they did with the speed and athleticism at all three levels that one had.

quote:

am by no means saying it would look like last night. CEH would be hard-pressed to get 100 yards but this offense would score in the 30s.

Auburn held this offense to 23.

Do you believe Auburn’s defense this year is better than the 2011 defense?

I think several other posters have hit on this, but the key wouldn’t be the 19 offense vs the 11 defense, both would have their moments and make plays, but the 11 offense vs the 19 defense.

As has been said, the run game of 11 would give this defense all kinds of trouble.

In fact, the ability of 11 to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball would probably swing the matchup, on paper at least, in favor of 11.

For all the talk, the “trenches” are still by far the biggest weakness on this team. That was the strength of 11, and Alabama was the only team that played 11 to within two touchdowns solely because of their dominance upfront. 19 doesn’t have even close to that.

That said, I think the game would be within one score either way, but I do think Burrow with the ball in his hands at the end probably wouldn’t be denied. That’s just the player/competitor/champion he is, but man it would be fun to see.

Here’s one more wrinkle to really derail this , I think the team with 11 Lee vs 11 JJ impacts the game as well.

Similar to Alabama, I do think Aranda could rattle and confuse Lee with some disguised coverages and pressures, forcing him into mistakes.

JJ on the other hand, has the mobility, though not the pure speed, that we saw have huge success this weekend at the QB position against 19.

Ultimately, I think the hybrid attack we saw with both in the middle part of the year when we were most dominant against UF/Tenn/Auburn was the best that 11 could be, but it would interesting to see how the QB snaps were divided up, since I do think Lee would have more success against this D than the 11 Bama D obviously.

I actually think 07 and 03 would be really fun matchups to think about as well

lol, 2011 offense would hang 40 on 2019 Defense and win with your score prediction. They hung 40 on every ranked team that year except Bama and State.
Copeland/Ware/Hilliard would make 2019 D-line quit.

Mettenberger was a RSSoph on that 2011 team. Let that sink in.

With better coaching and a different QB who was already on the roster, the 2011 team wins.

The winner would be the team whose rules were used. The 2011 team would demolish this offense if they called offensive holding and illegal man downfield like they used to. Under today’s rules the 2019 offense would light up that defense, and God knows the 2011 offense could not do much.

19 wins. The 11 o wouldn’t score enough.

The d would make stops but Lester would go conservative. Though 11 might score 3 special team tds on the current team
