Sometimes a parent pushing their son to a particular school can backfire.

in the one in a million chance my son plays a sport for another SEC school I will pull like hell against LSU when he plays them.

This is sports we're talking about. It's not war. It's not like his son denounced God and joined Isis.

I know this is hard to accept for some of you but some things are bigger and more important than being a college football fan. let that sink in a little.

You’d be surprised how the kids feel. When you go against a childhood or family school, there’s a lot of conflicting feelings and comments from friends and family. Not to mention the possibility that Tennessee could have not treated him as well. Lots of factors involved beyond “This is the football team I root for”.

I know my youngest sibling had a lot of conflicted feelings when went to a school that wasn’t LSU. My parents overcompensated to give him confidence to not be self conscious about some of the mean spirited comments people made.

Definitely.

I don't anticipate having a kid good enough to be a recruited athlete (but I will definitely act like it during travel ball, frick those 16 year old umps). But I hope that I'm supportive and help them make the decision that makes the most sense for them. Even if it's not LSU.

But Alabama and Kansas are definitely on the NO list.

ETA: That both those schools have former LSU coaches as their football coach is mere coincidence. The reason they are on the NO list is that I wouldn't shed a tear if a bomb dropped on either campus and everyone there were eliminated. And I don't want to be in a position to have to reconcile that feeling with one of my children on that campus.

Of course. Without a second thought. One is a stupid college team you pull for and the other is your child.

I showed my son this thread last night and he laughed. He said no way am I headed east Dad.... unless its maybe Florida. I quit breathing and got anxious. I explained to him why not Florida as well. Obviously it would be up to him if he is that fortunate. I do know if the Tigers ever offered him, there would be no hesitation on his part.

My daughter graduated from FSU and it didn’t cost her a penny. I even wear an FSU Dad shirt on occasion. When she was thinking about going to UF, she asked if I would wear a Gator Dad t-shirt. I told her HELL NO and that if she went to UF, the only thing I would help her with was filling out student loan applications.

re: Would you, as an LSU fan and father of a recruit, do this?
I have a grandson that is 14, 6’2” 262lbs. As 8th grade DE at Webster Junior High including sacks he had 49 TFL. He is Finishing up the 8th grade this week and in spring practice earned the starting nose guard spot on the Minden High Varsity Football team (4A)and will start Monday for the spring game. Devin White picked him out at a camp last year and told him he had what it takes to make it all the way. They have been texting ever since.

So I have hopes he will make it to that next level. I am a big LSU fan. He is too, however he has that twitch in him to play out of state. He has buddies on his team that are big Saban fans and he likes other big name schools.

If he ends up a top talent recruit that LSU would want then surely there would be some of those schools in play too.

So I have to ask my self how I would react if he made it to the next level and picked someone other than LSU. I don’t think I would stop being an LSU fan but would be tormented if His team plays LSU.

He has been living with since he finished the 7th grade. And he likes to kid with me. No one really knows what a kid will do. Even those close to them.

Yeah, no way I could do this. I could never ever "pull like hell against LSU". NEVER

You can pull for a player and not pull for the team. I have done that many times.

That's a little over the top dramatic, isn't it? War?

I am a huge fan of a sports team. I am not a fan of war.

Is it so black and white that you have to do one or the other?

I can see if your kid goes to work for Budweiser. A person switching from Miller Lite to some version of Bud product.

But to switch a team you have been a fan of your whole life? A school that family members attended, friends went to, people from your high school attended and did well in sports.

Nope, I can pull for both - a son and a team. By team I mean the same one I have pulled for all my life.

Man this is sad. I wanted Moses at LSU, but I certainly don’t hold any resentment towards a father for letting his son go where he feels is best and supporting him 100%

Yes it’s true. No reason to lie. I like to think it’s LSU all the way but you never know. He knows how I feel about LSU. If he ends up not on that level I hope for La Tech as they are close by.

He is going to the 3 day LSU camp in June. Hopefully they leave a lasting impression upon him. They know he is coming. Devin told them to look out for him.

He has a YouTube account with some video of 8th grade. Ashton Makhi Reed is his name but there are about a dozen ones named that. Look for a picture with a kid in blue 40 Jersey on and that him. Right DE in videos

Ree, I generally like your posts and appreciate your contributions here, but you're off base on this one. It's pretty hypocritical to take this stance when we go out and recruit kids from out of state and expect them and their families to be all in. Some of our teams like tennis and beach volleyball are almost 100% out of state kids or we wouldn't be competitive. Just think what a bummer it would be if Fehoko's Dad who was the hugest Hawaii nut took this attitude.

Kids choose a school for many different reasons and if they think it is in their best interest to attend a different school, then the right thing to do is support them. It doesn't mean you change you own personal fandom, but you do tone it down and represent for your kid when needed. Once they graduate, you can go back to whatever you want to do. Taking down a sticker is not compromising your support for your team. It's showing respect and support for your kid, which is the most important thing you can do.
