Blueshirt is a grey shirt that acts like a walkon, can play and practice, during his greyshirt year. To be a blueshirt you have to have been a non recruited walkon though.

but count them against the next year's scholarship total, as long as they don't play.

So people know:

Recruited Prospective Student-Athlete. Actions by staff members or athletics representatives that cause a prospective student-athlete to become a recruited prospective student-athlete at that institution are: (Revised: 1/10/90, 1/11/94 effective 8/1/94, 1/10/05 effective 8/01/05, 12/13/05)

(a) Providing the prospective student-athlete with an official visit;

(b) Having an arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with the prospective student-athlete or the prospective
student-athlete’s parents, relatives or legal guardians;

(c) Initiating or arranging a telephone contact with the prospective student-athlete, the prospective studentathlete’s relatives or legal guardians on more than one occasion for the purpose of recruitment; or

(d) Issuing a National Letter of Intent or the institution’s written offer of athletically related financial aid to the prospective student-athlete. Issuing a written offer of athletically related financial aid to a prospective student-athlete to attend a summer session prior to full-time enrollment does not cause the prospective student-athlete to become recruited.

Prop 48 is what they called the rules that first added academic requirements (e.g. grades, act, certain classes) to be eligible for a scholarship. Started in 1986. I think this is what killed Archer as a recruiter more than anything. Man had no plan and couldn't adjust. Probably just too young at the time.

First heard of it a few years ago with Tennessee when they were back-counting and forward-counting and all that crap. They were signing like 35 a damn cycle

Blueshirt is a gray shirt that can play and practice. They don't count for the incoming class, they count towards the NEXT class's scholarship limit.

Here's a great breakdown:
Early Enrollee
-Can have in-home visits
-Can use official visits
-Counts towards 2017 class
-Enrolls Spring 2017

Fall (Regular) Enrollee
-Can have in-home visits
-Can use official visits
-Counts towards 2017 class
-Enrolls Fall 2017

Blueshirt
-Cannot have in-home visits
-Cannot use official visits
-Counts towards 2018 class
-Enrolls Fall 2017

Grayshirt
-Can have in-home visits
-Can use official visits
-Counts towards 2018 class
-Enrolls Spring 2018

You pretty much have to be at walkon level to be non-recruited right? How does that even work?

So technically a person dead set on playing at LSU that's a stud can just walk on and blue shirt.

What prevents those types from being accidentally visited by the coaching staff?

Sounds shady.

Stud? Depends on the definition, but I don't see it. Look at the definition of recruited athlete I posted above. It's very hard to believe that a "stud" wouldn't have been recruited at some point.

I think this may be more common at the FCS level where a good high school player could earn an early scholarship by walking on. Remember that this is just a temporary way to get around the numbers this year. A Blue shirt will count against the numbers (both the 85 and 25) the next year. It would take some special circumstances for this to happen at a high level FBS school. I don't see it becoming very common.
