DBs have big egos. It’s part of playing the position. If they don’t get PT right away as a 5* or high 4* they don’t want to go there or they transfer out.

We average/get 1 good DB a year. Some leave in 3 yrs, some transfer out like Fat

Usually leaves us with 1 good CB and 1 good S every season, with the other CB and S being a bit of a liability

Depth isn’t what it used to be. Need to recruit better/deeper to be the real DBU

Right. There isnt any sugar coating it.
Last year we could still claim dbu cause their were ballers all over the secondary
This year not so much.
The safety position is really bad and their isnt much in the wings

Our OL recruiting may be worse.

I question this and the Bo Pelini hire several months ago and got lit up.

Nice to see others finally coming around with similar concerns. I'm sure it will work itself out.

Recruiting guys that weight 165 and 170 lbs is what happened. We are not physical at all.

Focus has been on tall dbs. Seems like a lot of those weren’t ranked high and haven’t developed. Most of them are rail thin and aren’t gaining weight.

We’re not committing enough of the classes to them if I’m honest.

This is the fallacy of “recruiting for needs”. The “needs” are the same every year, because the recruits are not going to really contribute for the first couple of years. Stingley, Boutte and some others are exceptions, but in general it’s true. Every year get...

5 offensive linemen
2 300 pound dlinemen
1 rangey SDE
2 pass rushing WDE (because this position is so important)
3 WR
1 TE
1 RB
1 QB
3 LB
5 DB

That’s 24. Use your last one on an extra RB, TE, QB, or the best available athlete.

You couldn't question anything on this board from January 2109 to August 2020. I questioned Safety numbers after Joseph entered the portal and was told LSU is fine at safety. For the 2018, 2019, 2020 LSU got 2 S(Hampton and Toles). Probably going to take 2 in 2021 but I think it needs to be at least 3.

We are not that far off. Sky is not falling. The defensive problems so far this year are not because of a huge dropoff in talent. It is a mix of coaching, communication, and miss tackles.

Having said that, we would be better with a couple of recent guys that should be in purple and gold but aren't. Kelvin Joseph and Patrick Surtain are difference makers that aren't here. I am still pissed we didn't get Surtain.

I started thread last Spring about the lack of 4-5* DBs this year. Got skewered as would be expected. NEVER question DBU you know.

Now, it seems we are recruiting tall and very skinny DBs who take years to fill-out and gain some muscle mass. Flott is still a stick and Ward isn't far behind...

I'm not saying we are that far off but if you want to claim dbu, you have to step it up.

Pelini shouldn't have been hired, plain and simple
O had to go back to a 4-3, when none of the personnel fits it.

Excellent post Penrod.

The recruiting numbers need to be more consistent.

There is no situation were it is ok to tell Mario Goodrich that we don't want you because Coach O decides that we are only going to take 1 cb in a football world were passing is king.

That 1 decision was beyond stupid. Even if Surtain came here that is only 1 cb in a whole recruiting class.
We have Zero corners and Zero safeties left from that class.

That is the worst type of recruiting failure.
Then to make matters worse Coach Raymond is taking to many skinny athletes that did not play much cb in high school as his "depth" guys and it is taking them too long to gain weight and develope and we don't have the time for that due to Zero defensive backs in the 2018 class.

The other person in this thread talking about the OL is right also. We are taking to many guys that are already way overweight for their position in high school. There are always exceptions but it is much easier to recruit and develope an OT that is 270/280 in HS that has good movement instead of an OT that is already 330 to 350.

Good flashback about Goodrich....what was the deal with losing Major Burns to UGA as well? Was it because he projected more as a S instead of CB?

Definitely agree nobody should use the term dbu for a while. Pelini gets an "F" so far! Not sure if he can salvage his job. Don't know if he was a bad hire at the time. Seems like coach O made the decision to go to 4-3 and had to find a DC for it. Can't blame a new hire without having the head coach share in the accountability.

The combination of switching to 4-3, new DC, and lack of time together due to Covid was more than this staff could handle. That is what we know. It is obvious that the players don't know what to do on the field. We will never know if Pelini would have had them ready if Covid hadn't happened. We just know they weren't ready. We are about to find out if our coaching staff is upper echelon or not. Not looking promising so far.

too many eggs in one basket. putting a lot of emphasis on those high ranked DBs and betting everything that they come here. and then theres the risk of what happens when you miss out when that high ranked DB commits elsewhere, you then have to quickly get a back up plan together and tell someone that "hey youre not our first choice and prolly not our second or third, but we'd love to have you here". and then theres another risk of what happens when your backup goes elsewhere and now youre lacking in the DB department.

high risk high reward. instead of consistently having good to great quality and quantity of DBs, youre getting great to amazing quality at the sacrifice of the quantity, leaving your DB room thin
