Edit: I called it in December.

Let me preface this by saying that I am in no way questioning anything about this kid, I'm just curious.

If he is all LSU, and has been for some time as everyone has been reporting, why isn't he committed to LSU?

I am 100% for kids taking there time and making sure they make the best, most informed decision they possibly can. Which leads me to believe that if this kid hasn't committed yet that maybe we aren't the lock that we think we are.

Again, not a flame, I want this kid more than anyone else in this class. I just think it's strange and wanted to start a little discussion about it.

The fact that he hasn’t committed yet tells me he’s more mature than every kid who commits and decommits. He will choose what’s best for him.

I completely agree that if he is not sure, he should wait. I also agree that it shows maturity.

I guess my real question is why is everyone reporting that him going to LSU is all but a done deal if it's obvious that this kid is still weighing his options?

Also, I don't know what there is to downvoted about in the OP, it's just a question. If anyone has any info that shows why it's a dumb question then please share it.

I’m all for kids ‘enjoying the process’ but do that shite during the season. Go to the games, get wined and dined (and probably 69’d) but then once the season is over, commit to your school. Don’t drag it out until NSD and leave a college you supposedly ‘love’ wondering if you’re going to commit or not.

Yeah I don't agree with you, a commitment really doesn't mean anything until the LOI is signed anyway. If a kid is still talking to other schools, then I don't think they should commit. A player should commit when they are 100% sure that they found their school and they are ready to shut it down. Otherwise the "commitment" isn't really a commitment.

I remember reading maybe two years ago that he has always loved LSU. Also has a great relationship with Raymond. Being DBU also doesn’t hurt.

Does anyone know what his hold up is? If he loves LSU and has a great relationship with his position coach then what's making him hold off on his commitment?

He doesn’t owe us, as fans, shite.. he can commit when he wants to

Look at it from a different perspective... of course, everyone who follows recruiting know the reasons why he is high on LSU and that he is likely an LSU lean... what about the people that know him, follow his team, or just live in his area... do you think they follow recruiting close enough to know all that? Doubt it... let the kid have his moment and get on some random stage and pick the tigers... it will be worth it in the end

All of his family is in Louisiana . Kid was born and bred to play for the Tigers. I think his dad regrets more than anything that he didn’t sign with Lsu and I’m sure that those feelings have been relayed to his son.

I am in no way saying he needs to commit, or that he owes us anything.

Like I said, I'm not questioning Patrick Surtain.

I'm questioning why people are reporting that he's all LSU when he's clearly still weighing his options.

He has EVERY right to weigh his options and if he chose to attend some other university, I'd wish him the best of luck. I'd be happy that he didn't commit and then decommit later.

My questions are about the reports of him being all LSU, not about him. (If that makes any sense)

His dad is getting interest in power 5 DB jobs, that could change his recruitment.

Then my follow up to that is, what's keeping him from setting an announcement date and committing? Obviously there something that is keeping him from doing that. Does he also like another school and is torn? Is he waiting to see what Anthony Cook does?

Again this isn't about the kids integrity or anything like that, I'm just curious about the situation.

He's reported as LSU for a few reasons.
He's always publicly said we are at the top.
Some analysts just get stuck in a certain way of thinking and never change their narrative. Basically ignorance
Most importantly to me, watch the contenders. FSU has a new staff and a lot to space to make up with little time. Bama already knows their 3 corners. Smith, Joseph and Josh Jobe, Miami commit. They'd make room but to me its telling that they want 3, have 3 "in" and he's still on the board. Clemson is the other major public candidate and I admit ignorance on the situation with them but I havent heard any buzz between the 2 so I'd figure they aren't major threats.

Finally an answer! That makes a lot of sense. Hopefully the Tigers can convince him that it is valuable to learn from someone else. I'm sure his dad has instilled as much knowledge as possible in him and getting coached up by someone with a new perspective might be good for him.

But I'd completely understand if he goes to play for his dad.

His dad has coached him forever, and there's no guarantee he's definitely getting a job, but it definitely could change things. I dont think it's a GUARANTEE his son would follow him, but hard to think otherwise as well. At some point you have to cut the cord and make your own name. Maybe Surtain Jr. doesn't feel like he has to do that though until the NFL. Surtain Sr. LOVES Raymond though, so he would be in an awkward position if he was hired by say UF. Because UF would absolutely expect his son to follow him there, but I believe his dad has said before he thinks Raymond is the best coach out there.

I wonder if he’s waiting to see if Jackson and or Toliver declare? I doubt it but these ultra competitive DBs usually want to play day 1 and leave there junior year.

That also can work in reverse too.

We've seen recruit package deals before where the prize backs out after getting offers for his friends. Most non-HC movements take place between Jan 9 and NLI day. I will laugh if he signs a coaching contract at another school and in Feb, junior signs a LOI to us.

There's one reason to wait right there. Rare, but if offers are being tossed you never know.
