Didn't see this posted, but seems pretty significant for recruiting.

quote:

An amended bill proposed in Louisiana would let state universities and their employees compensate players for the use of their name, image and likeness; facilitate NIL deals; and give boosters more freedom to pay prospective recruits.

quote:

Senate Bill 250 filed Thursday by Sen. Patrick Connick (R-Marrero) would repeal those sections of the original state law passed last summer, which unintentionally created more restrictions than the NCAA’s sparse guidelines.

The bill will be considered during the upcoming legislative session that begins March 14.

“The NCAA did not take any action,” Connick said, “and so this was our response.”

quote:

If passed, Louisiana schools and their employees can compensate and direct payment to current players or recruits through NIL deals.

The proposal would also remove limitations on athletic boosters, striking language that prevented them from using NIL “as a recruiting inducement or as a means of paying for athletics participation.”

Wait so basically LSU and it’s staff/faculty can pay players directly now? This seems huge. Less of a mess trying to find an actual outside business to sponsor player NIL deals.

So, wait. The bill says someone can give money to the athletic department, take the tax deduction, and LSU can use the money to buy all the players it needs?

And, if I read that correctly, the coaches can lay it all out on the table during the recruiting process.

Congrats to Sen. Connick for introducing the bill, but sheesh -- this is nuts.

So I'm very happy that this is happening and lsu is getting on top of the NIL ball and not getting left behind, but does anyone else hate NIL deals? Feels like college football is dead.

I hate it, but there’s no reason to be playing a game with one arm tied behind our back. The morality ship has sunk on college athletics. This fight was lost long ago.

Using it to pay recruits is ridiculous and needs to be regulated but why would anyone be against guys like Boutte making money?

You guys are acting like this passed. It hasn't. I hope it goes through because we have to stay ahead. It sucks for college ball but it is what it is. You either stay ahead or fall behind.

Hopefully some politician doesn't stand in our way of competing and winning these recruiting wars.

They need to remove any restrictions and let LSU be covered by the rules that the NCAA has set. Nothing more. Our rich boosters need to have a fighting chance against the likes of Texas schools

There was a time when you knew your all American WR was coming back for his junior year. You didn't have to have a bidding war in the off season to keep
Him from going to Bama.

Under the proposal, LSU, other schools and their boosters will have the ability to arrange deals — as long as they don’t become pay-for-play situations. Athletes still have to participate in advertisements or autograph signings, for example, to avoid losing their eligibility.

So, the difference between "pay-for-play" and an acceptable NIL deal is the athlete fulfilling NIL obligation?

Who are the pay-for-play police? Who is responsible for validating that the athletes are fulfilling their NIL obligations (the NIL contract holders, the school, the NCAA)?

If this amendment's intent is to remove barriers for LSU and put it on same level playing field as other states, why not go one step further an give Louisiana colleges an advantage over other states (eg, state tax advantages for individuals and businesses who structure NIL deals for these student-athletes)?
