LSU offered Johnson, who is considered one of the top catchers in the Southeast by Perfect Game, a preferred walk-on spot when he committed in October, but the opportunity to receive some scholarship money from the Bulldogs was too much to pass up.

Baseball coaches can only offer 11.7 scholarships each year to its full roster, and it is common for LSU to appropriate more of that money to out-of-state prospects who are not eligible to receive TOPS. "When I went to their camp, LSU was already out of its scholarship money," Johnson told The Town Talk. "I didn't want my parents paying a lot of money for me at LSU when I could go somewhere and pay for a little of my school.

I don't blame him. Best of luck to him. LA Tech is getting a good player.

Tulane did the same thing in the late 1990s/early 2000s.

It is a shame there aren't more baseball scholarships. There should be at least 20.

25-30 scholarships would completely change college baseball

I'd be happy if they just bumped it back up to 13 in the next couple years. I think any change will have to be gradual. That's because it will be fought every step of the way. There are too many schools out there that still aren't even funding all 11.7 and see the increase as a way to further the lead of the haves over the have nots.

The schools who cant do it in Division I will just have to be left behind. The game is peaking and the next big change needs to be to scholarships to continue driving it forward. Absolutely silly a sport that is becoming as big as baseball in college is limiting less than 12 scholarships per 35 roster players.

Life's not fair. We don't need 30+ conferences that play D1 baseball. There are haves and have nots.

Title IX. Softball gets 13 schollys. They need to add another women's sport.

I think there just needs to be an adjustment of the title ix formula. Take football out of the equation altogether.

And why does women's basketball get 15 scholarships?

I do think in the current environment, LSU should be adding women's bowling and women's rifle in an effort to bring either a wrestling or men's soccer program into the fold.

Title IX should NOT be equal scholarships. It should be equal SPORTS offered. There isn't a women's sport that can touch football. So make it simple. X amount of sports offered for men and women.

Grew up with his dad....was a hell of an athlete. Best of luck to Keelyn, would have been cool to have him on the team though.

Lester Earl you are either an idiot or have never seen Keelyn play. He is rated one of the top catchers in the country for a reason. He has freakish arm strength and speed. Nobody was able to steal bases on him. He has one of the top bat speeds in the country as well. If he doesn't go in the draft, Tech stole a gem at a position of need for the Tigers. It's a shame we only get 11 scholarships for over 30 players!

I am sure a lot of kids around the nation have to make that decision. It sucks, but I can understand why he did what he did.

I agree with everything you said but this. WM was 5 for 5 stealing on him per Gamechanger.

Not backing up LE at all but he isn't even in the BA Top 500, so I dont think there's any danger of him being drafted high enough to sign. While he certainly looks like a good player, he doesnt seem like a cant miss if we offered him 0 scholarship money. We tend to offer most guys at least a piece of the pie. Typically only the last few guys in a recruiting class usually have no scholarship money.

Not to say those guys never turn out to be anything, Laird was one of those guys IIRC, but generally they are expected to be roster fillers.
