What kind of C Prospect is Frey? He's a big boy but that's all I have.

I don't know how his defense is, but I know he's got a good arm. He's also a pitcher for his HS team and threw some of their big playoff innings last year. He's the QB for Rosepine as well, which you would hope translates to the leadership needed at the catcher spot.

He's a power bat. And he's a first off the bus looking guy. He will get stronger in the college weight program, but he's already very physical.

I know we're expecting a 2025 commit any day now. I'm wondering if it's a highly ranked in state kid.

It was. Jack Ruckert committed to LSU today. Big time get from Catholic High in Baton Rouge.

We are supposed to be getting another highly ranked 2025 commitment today . Two way player, LHP throws 91 . Uncle played for the Astros. Don’t know if or when he makes it public.

Oh damn. I knew we've been recruiting him. Didn't know that was his uncle, also didn't know how close he was to committing.

Thanks for the heads up.

Fangraph just updated their draft board for next year. Here's where they have current LSU players and commits ranked. Interesting that Berry is listed as a first baseman.

15. Jacob Berry, 1B
21. Brady Neal, C
30. Mikey Romero, SS
32. Tucker Toman, 2B
35. Gavin Guidry, SS
48. Cade Doughty, 3B
54. Justin Crawford, CF
57. Jared Jones, C

Here is a quote from the article about the FanGraphs update:

quote:

For the high schoolers, there’s a deep group of arms who aren’t even ranked on our current 67 who might show up with better stuff next spring and either work their way into the comp round, or become a team’s preferred place to take a $1-1.5 million overslot shot (Michael Barnett, Austin Charles, Gabe Davis, Michael Kennedy, Justin Lamkin, Jacob Miller, Hayden Murphy, Chase Shores, Robby Snelling, JD Thompson, and many others).

And his reasoning on Berry being lower than some other publications:
quote:

Maybe I’m going through a phase, but I’ve become warier of long swings that are vulnerable to big velocity, which is common in meaningful big league situations. As such, I’m a little lower on LSU designated hitter Jacob Berry, whose left-handed swing struggles to catch fastballs on the outer edge. Without a position, there’s not much room for an exploitable offensive flaw.

ETA: Longenhagen is based in the Tempe area, so he's seen more west coast guys in person. They don't have anyone in the southeast since Kiley McDaniel went to ESPN, so they may come around on a guy like Doughty a little later. (McDaniel is high on Doughty)

What’s his name? I don’t usually follow kids who haven’t played a varsity game yet lol

My assumption is that he's referring to this guy: Cam Caminiti

Fangraph writes:

quote:

Knowledge of the model-driven importance placed on draft prospects’ age is impacting the career tracks of more players, such that it’s noticeable at a glance with this year’s draft group. Mostly, it’s becoming more common for players to reclassify and/or matriculate to college early in an effort to become draft eligible while still shy of their 21st birthday. Eight of our current top 67 are college prospects who won’t yet be 21 on draft day.

Players reclassifying will become more prevalent going forward. I am not sure if this is good or bad for college baseball.

My personal opinion is that it's good. It get more talented players to college for three years rather than pro out of high school. Even if year one would have otherwise been their senior year of HS.

Now it's not the same for everyone. I do think it gives us a better chance to get Neal to campus, specifically because he's a catcher and HS catchers are a volatile prospect group. Combine that with the length of time needed to develop catchers and the Rule 5 draft/40 man roster effects of keeping a guy like that in the minors for a long time. He's also seemed very excited about playing at LSU in interviews, obviously that can change with a real 7 figure offer. But I think Neal is much more valuable as a proven college catcher at 20 years old rather than a high upside HS catcher at 17.

Cam Collier is a Louisville commit that is graduating like 1.5 years early or something crazy. He could be in the 2023 class, but will play this fall at Chipola . That really helps him and his draft stock, but it's doubtful he ever gets to Louisville.

Logan Tanner and Kevin Parada may prove your point this year by earning an extra $2M - $3M for attending 2 years of college.

I don’t remember Tanner out of HS, but Parada was rated right around Romo and Soderstrom IIRC, so it will be interesting to compare his bonus to theirs. I don’t know if soderstrom is still catching though, his bat absolutely took off this summer.

He announced his commitment about 15 minutes ago on Twitter. Top 10 player in his class.

Tanner is Brandon Barthel's son. Logan was a really good player in high school, pitcher and catcher. He's still one of my favorite catchers to watch, at all levels, and I think he could've pitched in college if it came to it. I still hate that we didn't even make a run at him. I'm interested to see how he progresses from a hitting and conditioning standpoint - hitting wise, he was clutch but not great, and I'm not sure if he'll just stay a big boy, fluff more into a DH kinda guy, or maybe even thin out. Point being: I think he was hard to project, and that's coming from somebody that has seen him alot.

I have a meeting at that time (of course). But I will definitely watch it once it's done.
